Such a brilliant woman, it's such a shame that drugs got hold of her. It happens far too often.

Alcohol and opiates, in great quantity, on an empty stomach. Very sad.

Poor Jessica. Having battled addictions in the past, I can say that she was speaking much more clearly than I could have while on the sauce. She paved the way for Connie and Katie, and they should thank God for her on a daily basis. RIP Jess, you were a pioneer.

Her speech sounds a bit off but she doesn't sound entirely awful. Worse things have happened on network news...

When Dan Rather walked off for like 6 minutes in the 1980s after throwing a fit. I don't think what Jessica did measures up to that level of arrogance.

From a Web site:
"In September 1987 Rather walked off the CBS Evening News set in protest over the network's decision to allow U.S. Open tennis coverage to cut into the broadcast. His action on this occasion left CBS with a blank screen for more than six minutes."

i wonder if anyone could confirm this: i believe that this clip is excerpts from the early network news cut-in that night after which, if memory serves, she was not taken off the air, but allowed to do the later cut-in. on the later cut-in, she fell apart almost completely.
further, i have been told that the tape of the later cut-in remains in a vault at nbc, and has never been publicly shown since.
any confirmation of these points?
thank you.

Actually, this was the first of the NBC Digests from this October in 1983, according to 'Golden Girl' (which is a must read if you're interested in Savitch.) The second Digest from that night went without incident (there used to be a posting on Youtube of this second Digest)after Jessica begged to do it (NBC wanted a backup to cover it.) Jessica claimed she had too much wine, but she was heavy into drugs. The Digest you see here was the vaulted clip; this posting is a home recording.

re women newsreaders on TV; years ago there was an NBC radio lady named Pauline Frederick, who did a lot of UN stories. She was good. When she got to be seen on TV finally, you could see she had some kinda facial oddity and talked out of one side of her mouth. She was kept on radio for years so no one could see her oddity.

Christine Applegate's Charc. in the movie Anchorman is partly based on Jessica Savitch. I grew up in Philly and remember her.

TV News is SO sexist. Dan Rather got away
with pulling a Diva routine over something trivial and walking away during live TV.
I am sorry Jessica did not get help for her
drug problem. We would have forgiven her.
I am very sorry about her death. I know exactly where she died. I live near there.
Anyway, Dan Rather should have been fired. However, he's a man so they swept he shenanigans under the rug at the time.

It was tragic how she died. She was very pretty and other than this clip when she was clearly intoxicated, a damn decent news reporter.

Here's what she says in the opening segment: "President Reagan has cancelled his planned visit to the Philippines. The White House blamed the pressure of congressional business but did not deny fear for the president's safety."

Do you know what drugs she was doing? I've heard they were her prescription drugs, but I'm not sure...
