Grand Funk Railroad - Inside Looking Out 1969

Grand Funk Railroad performing Inside Looking Out live from 1969. This clip was shot at "The Show" WITF-TV in Hershey,Pa. November 1969. Mark & Don were 20 & Mel 18 years old. This clip is timeless. I've had hundreds of messages from people of 4 generations worldwide that just are in awe of this powerful performance (Folks from 11 to 83 years of age). I've been told it's early "metal", to the original "grunge", to the real begining of "punk, to the first "garage band", to "pure tribal rock", to "straight-in-your-face rock", to "industrial-strength power rock". One things for sure, it is powerful, passionate, singular, & unique. Mark, Don, & Mel changed music forever with 10 minute Power Songs like this one. This is a POWER TRIO at its best. Grand Funk Railroad was truly a "Performance Vehicle". What you heard on the albums could be duplicated 100% on their live performances. Many would say it's impossible for a 3 piece band to do this live. See the impossible. Once you start watching it, it's hard not to finish it. This is the most popular GFRxR video on the net. Harmonica playing ... ( 1 week ago by notfragile33)
Harmonica playing in rock music is one of those things that came out of the blues--an element that is rarely heard by bands anymore as rock music as kept on tearing away from its blues foundation.
On this note, let me just say that Mark is one of the most underrated harmonica players in rock. While he may be no "Magic Dick", I rate him right up there with Jack Bruce and Keith Relf. He's certainly better than Robert Plant or Mick Jagger on the harp (they both suck at it, in my opinion!)

4 months after this performance on "The Show"--GFR would return to the recording studio to record the classic, "I'm Your Captain". And rock music has been the better for it ever since!

Yeah it's killer isn't it? You can get this exact version on the Grand Funk Live! album from around '71 I think it was. Not sure what the cd is, but it was a double-live album. I literally wore this record out when I was a kid! The best! :)

It's come to the point that I don't want to see the true rock bands from the late 60's and early 70's in the r&rhof. These bands define my teen years. The r&rhof is all about sell-outs, who let their music be used for commercials. Music from bands like Grand Funk would practically make my head explode. The last thing I want to hear is Grand Funk playing in the background of a viagra commercial. Screw the rrhof, it has nothing to do with rock.

As a huge Grand Funk fan since I was 15, I thank you for this clip. I saw them twice: August 1970, and March 1971. The August 1970 show was a life changing event. I really like "Inside Looking Out" because I was a Farner wannabe in a rock band in high school. Actually played lots of gigs and had a little local following. We played this song for a good three years and it always rocked! My bass player modeled himself after Mel, playing with a felt pick and using lots of slides in his technique.
