Video Description:
(this is from an old Beta tape with tracking problems) In 1982 Johnny had an encounter with the law when he was stopped for drunken driving. On October 14th, 1982, Johnny pleaded no contest and was placed on three years probation and fined $603. He was ordered to attend a drivers' education alcohol program. What did Johnny have to say about this on his show? Watch! (any "comments" that contain spam, name-calling, or libel will be promptly deleted by me)

You mean the cops ... ( 3 months ago by trivfan48)
You mean the cops came onto the set and gave him the ticket? By Carson's own words, he and friends were out to dinner, now I would assume that they went to a restaurant to eat and came out and the vehicle was noted to have an already existing violation, the outdated sticker. "but who said that cop can just waltz right in the show and of the greatest audience"? short answer; the law, who the rest of us have to bey. Go to those sites that show the results of DUI,it may change your view
What makes him ... ( 3 months ago by wc516)
What makes him different? well, he didnt lie, he owned up to it. Today its always someone elses fault. He handled it the right away and even made fun of himself (self-depricating) thats what makes him one of the best ever. he not perfect neither is anyone else but nobody could of handled the situation better in front of millions of people.

The "cop" that you see on this clip was an actor. This was just part of Carson's routine in explaining to the public what happened.

None whatsoever. ... ( 3 months ago by Muellerdon)
None whatsoever. Police merely stopped Carson's car because his license plate had expired -- they found alcohol on his breath, and gave him the standard drunk tests, and he was fined. Tabloids at the time were saying that Carson was hauled into the police station cursing and being abusive, but that's rather doubtful. Carson had always had a problem handling alcohol, and he stopped drinking after that incident.

Johnny was the best. Period. Never ever again to be duplicated. No matter what the incident, his son's death, this incident with his DWI whatever it was he dealt with it so gracefully and with such dignity and humility. Truly awesome. He was just so smooth and flawless it was amazing. The entire studio could have caught fire and he would have never missed a beat kept everything flowing effortlessly. The guy was a natural.

What a great person, Johnny was. A class act that will never be copied by anyone. Instead of Late night shows that are lame and have zero comedy, they should rerun The Tonight Show.

I was impressed with how Johnny handled that incident with such dignity and grace, while still cracking a few jokes about it. Some celebrities today revel in the spotlight of misdeeds and act as if they were simply publicity stunts. Johnny was genuinely embarrassed, but handled the incident like a professional and put it to bed. The world is worse off without a gentleman of his caliber.
Has anyone else ... ( 1 week ago by 1more4theroad)
Has anyone else noticed the huge loss of late night talent within the last couple of decades? Humor now, if you call it that, has slid down the slide of indecency landing in vulgarity (for the most part). Vulgarity is used for lack of talent where it should be. We lost a great comic in the loss of Johnny Carson. Thank God that I lived through those wonderful decades of Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, George Gobel. They are all sorely missed! Cheers to Johnny for this spot! Thanks for posting!
