Did Coldplay copy Joe Satriani?

IMO all this argument comes down to is who you are a fan of. Of course Coldplay fans arent going to accept that the songs are similar. And Satriani fans are going to be annoyed. Dont have a go at me if this video upsets you. (Coldplay fans) Im not claiming Coldplay copied anyone, just putting the thought out there for people to talk about.
Coldplay have recently been accused of copying 'Songs I Didnt write' by Creaky Boards on their new single Viva La Vida. The song is also similar, if not more so to Joe Satriani's song 'If I Could Fly'. Full Remix of the two songs is at http://youtube.com/watch?v=w3kytzHrKpo Msg me for mp3 of the

wow the maker is a MAJOR asshole!! 2 reasons this is not copied (and i am a huge Satch Fan by the way):
1. He tuned up the song by a whole step to make it in pitch with If I Could Fly 2. Yes, it is simalar!! IN 1 BAR!! that is 1 bar that the lyric notes are simalar to Joe's guitar!! And that only sounds simalar if it were pitched up!! So is it copied: NO

Chord Progression is off because Viva is moved up. I'm not a "Coldplay fan" of any hardcore nature. But a lot of music is often just remakes. The fact that their song is a different driving pattern and has lyrics makes this point moot. A lot of today's songs are just remakes of classic tunes.

the thing is, coldplay brought the tune to mainstream. which means that Joe isn't as good as ya'll say he is. If it took another band "ripping off" his junk, like ya'll idiots say, just so his crap will get noticed, then apparently it wasn't that good to begin with.

Well unless you're going to take it into consideration that mainstream listeners nowadays don't know jack about good music(just referring to the fact that no one in my class generation listens to any of the music greats out there) so we come to a point that is once again debate-able. Have you listened to the real song that Satriani wrote? It's pretty good, I'd say-whether or not it has the recognition of millions of listeners or not.

I beg to differ on your statement alejoriggi - quite often, more than enough, people have the technical ability and can make a "good sound" out of their instruments but if you know anything about music, there is a huge amount of emotion and creativity involved rather than just sound. Of course crappy sounding music will always sound crappy no matter what but if you think music is just sound, you have very little knowledge of it because you can't structure something as broad as music in a box.

Very alike, except that 'Viva La Vida' is pitched. I also thought I had heard the melody in 'Viva La Vida' somewhere else when I heard it the first time (not from Satriani though).

Coldplay has major label backing and pushing them into the mainstream, These big companies want catchy tunes that'll sell to the mass market who are used to bland music. There are thousands of amazing artists who only get small recognition sometimes none,and joe satriani is one who has done quite well,as he is still going 20 years from when he started and he tours internationally. He is known as one of the greatest, He is world class.

so what if they did? and I consider myself more of a Satriani fan than a Coldplay fan. If a band like Coldplay wrote a song a song that sounded just like mine, and they knew of me I would be rather flattered. Anyways, there's almost no new chord progressions or melodies out their now. They've all been done.
