It's that time of year again. Cute, fluffy bunnies are appearing for Easter and your kids are begging you to get one. Wouldn't this adorable, low maintenance pet make a great gift for your small child? Not so fast! Thousands of rabbits are dumped at shelters or just turned loose because people
don't realize how much work they are. Bunnies are a lifetime commitment. They can live up to ten years and are not "low maintenance" They need room to run and hop. The old "cage should be four times as large as the rabbit" rule just isn't true. Bunnies need lots of quality hay, pellets, fresh
fruits and veggies, toys and treats. A child can easily injure a rabbit by trying to pick it up or hold it. Bunnies usually don't like being held anyways, and would much rather just be gently petted. Sometimes they get sick and need expensive treatment from a vet. You will have to get your bunny
spayed or neutered if you want it to be healthy, and this can cost over $100. Rabbits are just as much work and cost just as much money as a cat or dog. Rabbits can make wonderful pets, but they are not something to go out and buy on a whim. If you really want a rabbit, do your homework and wait
until after Easter to adopt one in need.
