Thank you for your time to show how the roll is done. Don't think I would do it in shallow water. No protection. But a nice option. Thanks again.

True, if youre in shallow water, you should prob brace off the bottom of the river. But its actually just as protective as the c to c and faster. Your face isnt exposed at all since the only time youre actually looking down is once youre already rolled over.

Yeah, looks just like the twist and slice. I guess the back sweep is when he moves his head from the rear left corner towardds the right...
Great videos though...

Thanks....Look very carefully, there is no rotation in this roll, just a diagonal crossing. The paddle again moves because the torso moves BUT IT IS because the Torso moves by leaning backward in its diagonal path. Different body mechanics right the kayak. The rotation in the twist and slice is a different effect. Try it both ways the feel is different and very intersting......chris

Chris talks about ... ( 3 months ago by jcj230)
Chris talks about the body motion differences in an earlier comment. Also, body postion when you finish the roll is different - here you are fully on the back deck while a normal sweep finishes more to the side. Plus - less likely you will blow your roll by lifting your head or body before the boat is righted. Minus - you finish in a less stable position. This is the first roll I learned (from EJ's video) and IMHO is the easiest to learn.

The rodeo back deck roll you seek is in another video on Chris' page. The man can speak for himself, but you might want to check out his cred's before you call him an idiot.

I was able to perform this roll the first day I tried with about 50% success rate. I went out for the second time yesterday and did about 12 rolls with 100%. Wish I had a pool but the Puget Sound is pretty warm at about 50-55 deg. F Thanks for the vids, I'll try the C to C next.

I like to respond to all the comments but yours looks like you were a little quick to judge before you have looked at all the videos. But I will take it you are familiar with all . the commonly used rolls in different regions of the World. I will give you the benefit of the the doubt and assume you really do know what you are talking about. What is a roll there are many types of rolls? I am surprised you are Canadian. Usually Canadians are very analytical before they judge something.

Human nature, ... ( 6 days ago by speusa)
Human nature, people criticizing rolls they do not do, looking for a reason that theirs is the right way. There is nothing wrong with the back deck roll. You should not finish on the back deck, that is only a transition. As soon you get up on the back deck, sit up forward and take a strong stroke. STABLE. If anyone give you grief tell them if the C to C finished on the second C it too would be unstable, but it requires you to sit up with the head down. Back deck is an easier sit up.
