Yeah, both sonically and visually, the Who tore Led Zep to bits, but you forget that the Stones were good live too.......Led Zep actually never impressed me live. A studio band imo....but a WONDERFUL studio band.

YES THEY DO
i'm a huge zeppelin fan but
jimmy page became a sloppy guitar player in 1973(in studio he was amazing)
and the voice of robert plant became really anoying in live performances in 1973 too
seriously! in TSRTS when he sings whole lotta love i actually thought he was gay(no ofense but i can't help if he acts like that)
led zeppelin are amazing but the who are better in live performances conclusion:THE WHO THE GREATEST LIVE BAND EVER period!

Back in those days...HUMBLE PIE blew everybody they played with off the stage ... like in London Hyde Park july 71 ....where they opened (or supposed to) for Grand Funk ! in fact they stole the show delivering the heaviest concert I have ever atended to !! !Afterwards when Grand Funk hit the stage they looked and sounded like a Folk band. For younger generations ....pleaze check the Live Humble Pie Rockin the Fillmore before fixing yourself an opinion of the heaviest band of this area Rock ON !

blasphemy!
humble pie didn't blew grand funk off the stage humble pie was one of the greatest live bands but they were not better than grand funk Grand Funk Railroad was truly a "Performance Vehicle",they were a power trio at it's best

Hyde park July 3 rd 1971 : compared to the PIE heaviest set EVER performed by any Rock Group , the numbers of Grand Funk sounded like Xmas carols .... Check the NME / Sounds reports of the event (as I doubt that you were even born for this date ) !!!!! Steve WAS the man the REAL killer who INVENTED heavy Rock Music !!!Live, the other frontmen from this era looked like wax puppets compared to him! In terms of pure energy , raw power or rage NO other group can be compared to HUMBLE PIE ROCK ON

Be fair, compared to the Mighty 'Oo, most bands came of looking like a bunch of amateurs.
Mind you, I reckon their prime started the moment Moon joined, although I will conceed that, live, they peaked in the late sixties/early seventies.

Curt Cobain owed a lot to these guys, who were old enough to be his grandpas by the time he started to thrash around and make noise with a guitar.

I think that the reason the who arent more popular is because they werent a great studio band but as a live band they were unmatchable, but live performances are rarely noticed.
I disagree somewhat ... ( 1 week ago by bbqplatypus318)
I disagree somewhat. While they were much better live than they were in studio (obviously, seeing as how they were the greatest live band of all time), they did release good studio albums. Everything they did from Sell Out to Quadrophenia is superb, great enough to rank as a lesser band's sole crowning achievement. For the Who, each is just one in a series of spectacular albums (though if I had to pick one, I'd pick Quadrophenia).

Yes, but long after they'd peaked. Even with Keith, they hadn't done anything wonderful since '74.

well said bbq.... ... ( 5 days ago by loonymoongirl)
well said bbq....and may I add....the reason everything they did is SUPERB is because Keith Moon is still the BEST F***ING DRUMMER in the world; Pete writes AMAZING material, unmatched by ANYONE and can get sounds out of the guitar like no one before or since, and John was THE 1st & only BASS (not player but) GUITARIST. Just completely AWESOME talent when combined is unparallel to any other band. PERIOD. Well, except maybe the Beatles....but in a different way. LONG LIVE THE WHO!!!!!!!!!
Coincidentally, I ... ( 5 days ago by bbqplatypus318)
Coincidentally, I happen to think that the Who's "peak" years coincided with the best years of rock music - from '65 to the release of Quadrophenia in '73. (If you want to get REAL specific, you can narrow it down to '67 to '73). Not that By Numbers and Who Are You weren't great albums - they were, just not QUITE as much as some earlier ones. And then Keith died and they released two albums which both sucked on toast with a side order of hashbrowns with the exception of ONE hit song. Go figure.
