According to a book written by his final lover (Jim Hutton). This performance was mimed because the two of them didn't have time to rehearse. The book told a story about Freddie getting pissed off at one of the sound engineers because the vocal tracks were slightly off during the performance of Barcelona.

Any performance of this size with a full orchestra and backup chorus would always be performed in playback. Rehearsal is used for blocking choreography and start/stop cues for the audio engineers and lighting technicians. Considering how long it takes to get a recording near perfect in the studio, it is next to impossible to guarantee in a live situation so it's not unusual for the singers to perform with playback.

If done in studio or live - it was great! As Montserrat says in another interview it was a revolution for the opera world. And it was more than gorgeous....I love it. ;-)
