After you have build up some muscles you should stop using the cough.
Holding your feet in the air instead of on the cought costs more strenght and is therefor a better way to grow muscles faster.
I would suggest using a mat of some sort under your body since doing these exercises can be annoying or for some people painfull when done on the floor.
