Dave Allen - Giving up smoking

Uploaded by: femaleanimal
Video Description:
Particularly heartfelt routine from 1984 - well, we know it was based on personal experience! Around this time he seemed to be developing the observational side of his act and leaving behind the more traditional jokes.

Well, those are different people! By Those People, in this context, I meant converts.
I am actually pretty sure hisassociation with smoking was extremely vexing to him in later years and could even have had something to do with his reluctance to release his shows on video/dvd.
Interesting discussion - thanks!

One would hope that they are different people although there are those who quit smoking but are still are involved with its promotion. However, I think the stats say that there is a higher proportion of smokers in the tobacco companies than the general population. They're promoting a product that's killing them as well!

Is that right? I`m sure I heard that, in the 1950`s (when smoking was pretty much the norm amongst adults..or was it?), there was an unexpectantly high number of non-smokers in the tobacco industry. These days, of course, they usually excuse it with the "personal choice" line.
As for Dave Allen,it`s just a shame that he is (still) associated with smoking as it detracts from what a brilliant man he was.

If only it were a personal choice instead of a terrible, devastating addiction. I was just speaking to someone the other day who said "Why did I ever take it up?" and I said "Well you made the assumption that loads of other people were doing so presumably there must be some benefit in doing it." It's only when you're addicted you realise there isn't. I have heard that the tobacco firm offices are thick with the poisonous fumes of tobacco so it seems many of them get caught in their own web.

Well, not in the UK, as that would be illegal now - even at tobacco companies! Alot of smokers regard this as a violation of their human rights, which is rather ironic. Certainly "personal choice" is an excuse or justification that alot of smokers put across. And they are not interested in the personal choice of non-smokers - or their human rights.

I'm pretty sure that their real "personal choice" would be to become the fresh air breather they once were - but oops, they got addicted. Society as a whole has to solve this problem because now it's our problem. How do we stop people selling a product which generates so much money?

How do we stop people selling a product which generates so much money? You can't and besides, how about alcohol? How many ppl get killed by drunk drivers? Or attacked in the streets as we read today, by some drunk. Why isn't there the social damning in the same way as there exists for smokers. And no, I am not a smoker. Was once, quit long ago. But the evil companies didn't get me to start. It was at the time, all around and accepted. But there isn't the same sort of what I'd call persecution

of smokers. Good grief, ppl saying other ppl shouldn't even be allowed to smoke in open spaces outdoors? But forgetting all that, you're right about generating money and don't forget the taxes. The booze industry is not as easy a target as was the tobacco companies. It was tried once, remember? If tobacco was banned there'd be huge black market profits as there was during prohibition. And possibly with the same sort of violence. many non-smokers have made a religion out of their cause tho.

It seems to me that you think having a cause of trying to get rid of cigarettes is a bad idea. I think it's a good idea and I will stick with my cause. Of course I'm also not a fan of drunken people wandering the streets or driving cars but I believe that if cigarettes went, alcoholism would also reduce.
No. Not a bad idea ... ( 1 month ago by JazzMad1)
No. Not a bad idea at all. But I have a problem with making it a religion or making criminals out of smokers. And btw, lots of ppl who have never been smokers and so don't know the addiction, also do not understand the the pleasure a cigarette can offer in stressed situations. I would also add that I have never known a smoker who had to rob anyone to support the habit. But it is an addiction and not a good one I agree. I was once a smoker sorry to say, but never a drinker I'm glad to say.

Ha! Well, I said that and I posted the video! Let me put it another way - it`s a shame that it is one of the first things people think of when they think of him rather than his brilliance as a comic. He clearly went to great lengths in later years to disassociate himself from smoking.

All of the above will have been influenced by him, but won`t give him a name-check because he is not a trendy comedian to reference at the moment. I find it kind of sad that someone said they hadn`t heard of Allen until they read Peter Kay`s autobiography! Still, at least Kay has the decency to acknowledge him.
