One of the CSN&Y band members in an interview once described the meaning of this song as the following: "Almost cut my hair" line wasn't always meant to be taken in the literal sense. Sure, back then almost all of the hippies and more liberal minded folks had long hair. But it also meant people with any length hair that didn't follow the current(at that time) political and social norms.

BTW, I think the lyric is not "Like looking at my mirror and seeing a scar" but rather "...seeing a police car". Makes a whole lot more sense, to me at least. But maybe I'm just paranoid...

When I was 15 I had a chance to go see CSN&Y at the Greek Theater in Hollywood CA. My sister was an usher that season and she offered my free tickets. I said to her "are they the ones that play that song called Marakesh Express I've heard on the radio?" "yes she said thats them" I didn't go because I didn't like that song. Boy what a dummy I was!

This song has reminded me to never be a sell out. Our Governments are cronies of big business and so I'd rather be a 'freak'. Ive been playing this for so long and it still gives me shivers down the spine ! It reminds me of Freak Brothers mags, smoky rooms, anti-war demos, festival sunrise and hoping the Cops dont pull my van ! Just playing makes your clothes go denim and your hair grow!
