| rumour/rumor, colour/color, cheque/check; these spelling differences merely show the greater French influence on language in England then in American English. After the Normans conquered England a lot of French words were incorporated into English, American spellings merely remove some of that influence, although words like "lieutenant" still remain. It's nothing to get angry about, perhaps you should learn a little bit about the linguistic history of your own country! |
