If it wasn't for the Kinks you wouldn't have the Jam, or at rather the Jam you would have wouldn't be as good! Everyone knows that Weller listened to the Kinks a *lot* during his burnout between "This Is The Modern World" and "All Mod Cons". Saw Ray Davies a few years back at the Royal Albert Hall. Awesome showman. Have seen Weller live too but he wasn't as inspiring. Don't get me wrong, I like him (check out my id, for example) but you must admit Davies has had a big influence on him.

It is a true story that there would be no Jam without The Kinks, though when I listen to those old records I can not determine what the hype was about. In retrospect, I cannot even figure out what the appeal of The Kinks was for me as a teenager in the 80's. To this day The Jam's catalog is still comes across as fresh and energetic, retaining the vibrancy that made it so special to begin with.

Theres no other British artist who lived past the age of fourty who has integrity like Paul Weller in my humble opinion. Im not an old fart either im 26 - I just think he has never sold out & never will - Noel Gallaghers a bit like him - They have a 'Not bothered about the bollocks atitude' I mean look at another major songwriter who came about the same time as weller 1977 sort of - Sting. Now look at the difference between those two!?

Totally agree. To take the point even further - what artist, Brit or American, has been as relevant as a musical creator/performer 30+ years later as when they started?? "As is Now" has songs as good as anything hes done. Granted all 3 of his incarnations have varied greatly, but he has never been afraid to reinvent himself instead of resting on his original laurels. Beatles-hardly, Stones-sucked for 20 years, Neil Young - Love him but hasn't done anything really good in 20 years.... NO ONE!!

Did I say the Beatles rested on their laurels? I said Weller never did. Bonehead, my point was, 30 years after the Beatles started, were any of them doing anything worth a shit? Nor 20, EVEN 10 years!! Take a look - Lennon - please, McCartney - nothing worth listening to, Ringo - yeah right... maybe Harrison - but he was the only one with any talent anyway.... Weller is a better songwriter than all of them put together.... OK, here it comes.....

John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is better than any Jam release. Any Beatles CD, Rubber Soul and on, is better than any Jam release as well. I've heard some Style Council/solo stuff, I don't like it.
I don't think even Weller would agree with your claim that he's a better songwriter than all the Beatles put together. Weller has written some GREAT songs, but an amazing amount of filler as well. Can't compare him to the Beatles...but now we're just arguing over our opinions of quality, so I'll stop.

hey i was at this actual concert,,if it was the one done in a circus bigtop tent due to vandels burning the original venue a few weeks before.i was a freash faced 16year old mod from london,best concert i have been to in my entire life(and ive seen a few)!!lots of fights with the french skins and their shitty cops!! the jam were an awesome band to see live,pure passion and energy,the songs weller wrote were sublime,no contest with the beatles,no brainer,
