When I hear Groban sing this song, I hear a complicated, intense song sung by a man who can possibly have one of the greatest voices of our generation, and yet does not understand about what he is singing. I have never heard a match for Groban's voice, but I don't think he understands the pride in which this song is written. It describes an ancient, magical bond between a man and his home, that politics and wars can never tarnish. In my opinion, Groban is just singing notes to the words.

How the hell can you conclude that based on his voice. You probably also confer more authority on low, deep voices like James Earl Jones. One shouldn't imbue superficial characteristics with such value. I think I learned that in 8th grade. Sorry to disagree, friend.

Well, I don't think it's a very difficult thing to infer. When one listens to someone sing, the listener can certainly decipher whether or not the song is being performed with feeling. It's truly a matter of opinion, as this conversation proves. Groban sings the song with emotion, yes, I just don't think it's the appropriate kind for this song. He's SINGING it beautiful, but he's not ACTING it enough. All songs must be acted as well as sung, but showtunes must be done so even more.

I always have liked Josh Groban. There is another guy that sang anthem, he's dead now but his name is Jan Werner. You all do a search on him when it's convient for you. There are two videos of him doing anthem, one that he performed live when he was 17 and another performance in 2004.

Well, thanks for explaining. You asserted that Groban fails to comprehend (and thus accurately express) the true, genuine sentiment of this song. I questioned what your assertion was based in (sorry for cursing, btw). From what I gathered, you were basing this on singing tone, apparent emotion invested in his singing style or "acting." I would argue that acting or "hand/body gestures" (as I presume you mean, what else could be considered acting while singing)

are not necessary in this medium. I still can't tell if this is a musical or just a singing performance, but it seems like the latter given the stage presence of the orchestra. The essence of song (emotion, depth, meaning) is conveyed primarily through voice. Acting, as you put it, is relevant in musical plays and such but is secondary to meaning & emotion conveyed in voice. Imo your critique would be valid were this a musical play but it seems it is a singing performance.

If you were to argue, that you don't think Groban grasps the significance of this song based on his (young/naive) age or his facial expressions I would concede that that is your own subjective interpretation. My James Earl Jones comment was to emphasize that one shouldn't be influenced by a person's physical features (not expressions, but features) to judge their intelligence, depth, etc. Groban is a beautiful singer but through nature "cursed" with a boyish face. Just make sure your judgment

sees through that. James Earl Jones has a deep authoritative-sounding voice, but one should not confer authority on a person merely for having such a voice. They should judge based on substance. That was my point. Groban looks young and naive imo, and I presumed part of your assessment was influenced by those features. Not to say he is deep, since I don't know him, but concluding one is shallow based on shallow features is imprudent.

Oh, I see. I apologize for the miscommunication. It was not hand gestures and facial expressions about which I was specifically speaking, but in a live performance (as opposed to recorded sound), these things are important. I was referring more to the acting in his voice. It's difficult to explain, but I think a song should be sung so that you BELIEVE what the singer is singing, which, in very basest of natures, is acting. I simply don't believe him when he sings this song. And I think this

is a charity review of the musical, so acting is a component of the performance, although I believe that in any live performance, some acting is always necessary (although I see where you could disagree) I believe Adam Pascal plays the other character in this same benefit, he's on this website as well. I guess you can say I disagree with Groban's vocal interpretation of the song. His tone quality and mechanics, or chops if you'll forgive the jargon, are as always perfect. He is consistent

I believe, however, that there is a more abstract side to performance (music, theater, film, etc.) that is much more difficult to judge and therefore varies from person to person. I have heard this song performed by many singers, and I just think some of the others, specifically Tommy Koerberg, seems to understand the song more than Groban does at the point in his life depicted in this video. örberg`s singing expresses the emotion of the song better. More passionate aso. Josh Groban sounds like a sheep who has been taking singing lessons. (Bad vibrations - if you know what I mean.)
