How is the title inappropriate? The reason they never got together was because of the "Age of Innocence". If the times were different, Ellen and Newland would have been together. But, for reasons of reputation, the propriety of the family name, as well as May's feelings, they were solemnly kept apart. "The age of innocence" is a perfect title:)
