In the harbor they stack them about 4 high loaded. In the bone yard I have seen them 8 high you have to go there to get an empty and they take one off the pile like big bricks. They are strong especially on the ends where they are reinforced to stack them.

I wonder how it is ... ( 3 months ago by sabrinac1)
I wonder how it is when there is a storm. Could that be very loud against the metal? I think it is chic and for people without children, especially for students it would be a great experience. But, forever I would feel clostrophobic. What about this one in Australia where the designer uses particle board flooring? Doesn't that have formaldyhyde in it? I'd worry about the levels of formaldyhyde. Just need solar panels and you're set.

I can't imagine it would be that much worse than a temporary building, or cheap office block which tend to have metal roofing. I think combining these containers to make bigger areas is the way really. Although the size is static, it does make you think about rooms you enter and how claustrophobic they may feel. It's bigger than an average caravan, and more sturdy - could be ok for some.

I've been inside the place, on the London Open Day weekend, last year (I was a volunteer guide at the Neasden, Churchill wartime standby bunker, on the Saturday). So I flashed my volunteer badge & got politely informed about the place, before the day officially opened! As for weather noise, the noise is dampened by the insulation & air gap between plasterboard (rockboard US-speak) & the outer insulated skin. They are comfortable IF a bit low internally.

Those rental rates can't be right can they? London is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Those rents would be unbelievably cheap.

CC 2 had 3 residents, the rest of the containers where artist studios, architects offices, design studios. Given the location of the place itself, the rates are okay. Although I would suspect that with the recession, such rents maybe revised. John Locke

I wouldn't want THEIR design, but people make them into REALLY nice places, they hook them together and take out walls and make them into HUGE living areas and the only way you could tell it was made with shipping containers is you'd walk outside

i've just started looking into this, and MAN it's getting my brain going. it would make an amazing house (just look at some on here) and STRONG too and you're not limited to the dimensions either, cut out a wall and make a huge living room really cool stuff that i'd like to look into using when I decide to get a house

Yes I want to build a dome home and use containers to add to the home for lesser priced space. Sleep in the dome section have the living room there too but use containers for other rooms game room craft room office space there is so much you can add for a couple grand. My climate is great most of the year our summers are too hot but the rest of the year we rarely use heating or cooling. Do it right you could radiant heat a container if you need to.

Shipping container homes (ISBU) have become a very big trend and a home that is built using ISBU's has a very comfortable quiet feeling that is difficult to describe. The new eco insulations for them stop any metallic echo or vibrations. Check out the website at ISBU Association to see other designs.
