I just saw the movie "Persepolis" the other night. It was a beautiful work: it made me laugh, it was interesting, and there's something about animation that culls one's attention. I also felt sympathy for all the characters and was only too happy to absorb the events that changed Marjane's life.

i'm sure there are many famous ancient iranians to be proud of, the problem is that the modern theocracy strangles creativity and expression, so it's not surprising that creative iranians like Satrapi criticise the regime. traditional culture only goes so far: I'm English, but would I want to live under a medieval English King? No, because I could be burnt at the stake for looking at someone the wrong way.
