Ralph Vaughan Williams: Serenade to Music (Part 1)

Uploaded by: hirowaki2
Video Description:
(Salzburg, June 2008)
How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank!
Here will we sit and let the sounds of music
Creep in our ears: soft stillness and the night
Become the touches [IB] of sweet harmony.
[HN] Look how the floor of heaven
Is thick inlaid with patines of bright gold:
[FT] There's not the smallest orb that thou behold'st
But in his motion like an angel sings,
[WW] Still quiring to the young-eyed cherubins;
Such harmony is in immortal souls;
[PJ] But whilst this muddy vesture of decay
Doth grossly close it in, we cannot hear it.
[SA] Come, ho! and wake Diana with a hymn!
With sweetest touches pierce your mistress' ear,
And draw her home with music.
[ES] I am never merry when I hear sweet music.
[RE] The reason is, your spirits are attentive --
[HW] The man that hath no music in himself,
[RH] Nor is not mov'd with concord of sweet sounds,
[RE] Is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils;
[NA] The motions of his spirit are dull as night
And his affections dark as Erebus:
Let no such man be trusted. [MBr] Music! hark!
It is your music of the house.
[AD] Methinks it sounds much sweeter than by day.
[MJ] Silence bestows that virtue on it
[ET] How many things by season season'd are
To their right praise and true perfection!
[MBa] Peace, ho! the moon sleeps with Endymion
And would not be awak'd. Soft stillness and the night
Become the touches [IB] of sweet harmony.

This piece was performed in the opening ceremony for the opening of Philharmonic Hall, now known as Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. The sixteen singers were made up of the great opera singers of the time. There is a recording of this performance out there. Very very nice! Who are these singers? What is the group's name and origin? Thanks.

That might be the version on Sony with Bernstein conducting. Jon Vickers is outstanding. The British never comment on this version. New York Philharmonic.

This version, good though it is, has obvious limitations. Those who would like a studio recording should consider the version by Sir Adrian Boult, available from Amazon for $8. The CD includes The Lark Ascending; Fantasia on Greensleeves; English Folk Song Suite; In the Fen Country and Norfolk Rhapsody No. 1, but the Serenade alone is worth the price. The female vocalists in the ensemble are superb. The great climax at the center of the piece is remarkable.

It certainly is a "ballzy" version! It does not have that very nice, but less ballzy, British choir sound.

WOW! This is really good. We did a rendition of it in Okinawa japan with student orchestra at a local fine arts university. Our tenor that sang:

Sucked ass... I sang baritone on this song. Unfortunately I didnt get a solo because our show choir composed of 13 students got the solos which I was bummed about. Nice job tho. Dang that piano player is great. 5/5 stars. =D
