Yup, i think we look at the cars in a little bit different way, and i think the two ways are respectable. First of all i admit without problems that porsche provide marvellous cars. They are really piece of engeneering. Furthermore, probably, my next car will be a used 996 turbo. So, really, you don't need to explain that they are good cars, i'm already convinced. I've driven some porsches and they are great.

But, i think you can guess that i'm buying a porsche because i don't have enough money to buy a f430. Exactly, and i don't have money enough to care in a proper way of a used 360. But, if i had money enough, my choice would be a f430. I guess that your point is that a gt3or a tt are at the same level if not better of a f430 about performances. Point taken. Then you could say that they are more usable everyday. Point taken. Cheaper? point taken.

So why? Because a Porsche is a marvellous car, the Ferrari is a slice of glory.

Between 1950 and 1972 Ferrari had official cars in every single big event. Excluding the indy500 Ferrari won in every race, sometimes literally dominating. Every single car was built in the same building they used in 1929 and they use now. When a car was not a winning car they used to cut it in slices and bury it in the little square in front of the factory itself, which is not bigger then a standard hangar of an airport. Ferrari was always using its own chassis and its own engine.

Can you imagine for a moment what does it mean to be at the same level in every single race with the monumental investments mercedes, porsche, ford, etc? Ferrai was not owned by FIAT at that time, it was only a little familiar factory, which was able to defeat on every tracks (or normal roads for mille miglia, targa florio and panamericana)everyone, every single giant of car world.

Being so succesful, Ferrari was surrounded by proposal to have road versions of those cars. Being Enzo Ferrari a smart business man, he started to build cars which were designed properly for road use, and this activity of Ferrari was a marginal activity until the Fiat owned it in 1975. A road Ferrari had to be a shocking good looking car, first class for performances and elegance. The shape and the design of those cars, road or track going, created a art design icon.

In 1972 Enzo Ferrari decided that all the energy of the scuderia should have been used for Formula 1. At the moment, Ferrari is the only team which raced in every single season, from 1950 to 2008. It's the most winning team of F1 history with 15 constructor's titles and 15 for drivers. It means more than a quarter of all avaiable titles. Always building it's own engine and it's own chassis.

As time goes by Ferrari bacame a elegance, style, performance and status icon (even a status icon, not only a status icon like somone writes). Latest production includes the FXX, 30 cars capable of being only 10 sec slower of the F1 ferrari (so basically not that far from F1 renault, lol) on a F1 track and the ENZO, one of the most advanced and fast road going cars ever made (very faster than a carrera gt).

Some of them are proper drivers, but they are not romantic as i am, others they look only over how much you spend to have a proper supercar, but the most of them are just not able to read a free page on wikipedia, even if they say they love cars, and the half of the time you are talking about cars, you are talking about ferrari.

I love the Porsche because its eolegant and not so extreme like the maserati.
But i also prefer it to the SLR because the Porsche is shaped like a beautiful lady...

^ those are the rankings from price/speed/style. Personally my favorite out of those is the porsche carrera GT. but they are all great matchines.
