The biblical writers, Gospels, blamed the Jewish leaders at the time for Jesus' death, because although the Romans were the ones most responsible, if you blamed the Romans then your writings would be discarded and you would be punished. Blaming the Jewish leaders kept the Gospel from dying out, but resulted in loads of unwarranted antisemitism down the line.
