Yes I did know, and it's due to a combination of factors, but my point is that at the time of the Soviet Union, especially just before the begining of there involvement of WWII it wasn't, and was infact greater than that of the US.

I mean the USSR/CCCP or Soviet Union, not Russia/Russian Federation. Which of course also included; Armenia, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, kazakstan, Kirzhgiastan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tadzhjikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
