If my memory serves ... ( 7 months ago by AlmostEthical)
If my memory serves me correctly (not guaranteed given my misspent youth) I read a long time ago that John Marshall, SM's drummer (with the bad moustache) gave a young Bill Bruford lessons. I saw John play in Sydney many years ago (forgot the band) and he was superb.

Really, did give lessons to Bruford?! I always loved Bill with King Crimson. He was also OK with Close to the Edge-album by Yes. I only found about this band about a week ago, reading an interview by Michael Giles. I ordered their 3 first albums yesterday :P

oustanding track from the superb "Softs" album. Also check out the later and much maligned "Land of Cockayne" where Karl Jenkins comes into his own!

Why so much criticism about post-6th lp Softs records? "7th" through "Alive & Well" were exceptional fusion records.

Love this - the guitar playing is astounding. Through the album Softs I then worked backwards into the earlier stuff. It's very different, but I love them both.

I much prefer this and Bundles to a lot of Soft Machines other works. Karl wrote some amazing stuff. Its not exactly fusion anymore, it has a very classical feel to it.

I like that SG Custom that John Etheridge is playing here. The pickguard arrangement is unusual, with a black lower pickguard, and the top pickguard being white. I wonder if it was stock that way, or if he took the pickguard off an SG Standard to replace the stock lower pickguard.

Pretty bizarre still calling themselves Soft Machine without Ratledge, Dean, Hopper, Wyatt or Dobson. Imagine the Beatles still being called that, but consisting of 4 completely different musicians.

Can anyone tell me what the deal is with the tom configuration on the Marshall's kit? I've seen Alan White play on something similar.
