I thought that Shane has to leave because he is a thing of the past. There is a new century very near. Times are changing and as Shane said to Ryker he knew that his times or the times of gunslinging and killing people were over.

Truly a masterfully directed scene by George Stevens...a little tidbit, I read where Warren Beatty was debuting "Bonnie and Clyde" in London and when the gunshots came up they sounded so poorly, like pop-guns- Beatty runs up to the projection booth and says "what the hell's going on with the sound!?" The projectionist says "It's OK, I fixed it, it's the worst sound I've heard since Shane..."

Well that's right, but he'd be of the past anywhere. The reason for leaving is given when Shane says to little Joey in the last scene: 'there's no going back from a killing. Right or wrong, it's a brand.'

Even when it's the only way out, a killing in a small community is against the deepest rule there is in society. You're right though maybe too, as it's only the arrival of settled society BECAUSE of what Shane does that makes killing unacceptable.

Is Shane is entering a new century where he would hang for the killings of Ryker and the others he shot up so he has to go? I can see a lawyer now, "You road to the Ryker place with the intention of killing them all. Premeditated murder, ladies and gentlemen of the jury."

"Shane! You shot him with your gun. I hate you!" --- Joey, paraphrased. Palance didn't know how to ride a horse when he made the film. When he got off the horse at the Stark homestead, he kind of oozed out of the saddle: they ran the film in reverse to put him back on the horse.

MakesmeAngry, when I heard Alan Ladd son tell the story, he said that they didn't want Wilson to take his eyes off Shane, as he didn't want to turn his back on him since both are killers. So they had it done in reverse where he keeps his eyes on Shane while getting on his horse.
