I drew a picture of a mouse-sized elephant scaring a human-sized mouse, and two people commented describing how it reminded them of a Looney Tunes cartoon. Neither of them could find it. Based on clues from both of them, I hunted for it, and lo! It is here! Thanks for posting this! :)

The question is, WHAT were they smoking? :) Seriously this is one of Warners' best. The Chuck Jones period was downright surreal at times. And you can't beat those facial expressions. I wonder; could this cartoon have been a reference to UFO sightings? This was around the time people first starting claiming to see them (early '50s), and of course they were widely dismissed as "mass hysteria".

Thank you so much for posting this! I happened to see it on Cartoon Network one day in 2002 when I really needed a laugh. Afterward, I spent a lot of time searching for it on DVD and elsewhere, as well as telling people about it. I eventually recorded it on VHS (and guarded it with my life), but I've been hoping for a better copy ever since then. I'm quite relieved!

As someone who has that "nasty, evil habit", that made me go back and take a look. There are four smokers in this cartoon: The stevedore (longshoreman) at the beginning Man who calls police because the elephant is in his birdbath Genevieve's mom (Marsha) Man in front of crowd watching flagpole painter elephantmarch wrote: Who isn't smoking in this cartoon?

I especially like the line "Mrs. Swanson, she was a synthetic blonde..." looneywoman wrote: LOL...it's been forever and a day since I've seen this one. I think one of the best scenes (and there are quite a few gems here) is the one in the psychiatrist's office -- ROTFL!!! Michael Maltese was certainly busy in the fifties, to be certain...and definitely hitting his stride. Great writing!

Heeheehee...I think my favorite line from that scene was the one about her insistence that she was seeing lavendar men in the sugar bowl *right* as the elephant makes an appearance!!! (The "synthetic blond"-bit was good too, of course.)

I love this. Why wasn't it ever made into a series? WB probably lost big bucks by not doing that. This was great. BTW, that 'scientist' at the end reminds me of someone, does anyone else see it? If so, WHO does he remind me of?

I just noticed that the voices were done by Mel Blanc, RIP. Why did 'Chuck' Jones get the credit for these cartoons? He only 'directed' them, (whatever THAT means in reference to cartoons) The actual WORK was done by many other people. Yes, they did get credit for their work, but really, how does one 'direct' a cartoon? Still, I really loved this. I never saw it before, and I was a cartoon 'nut' when I was young. Thanks for sharing.
directing a " ... ( 1 month ago by elephantmarch)
directing a "cartoon" requires no less effort then directing anything in live action. Chuck Jones was particularly adamant and drew all the major key drawings for the animators to keep everything solid. A director does just as much "work" as the "many other people". The cartoon would be a mess is there wasn't a main person with the final say and vision on everything. For a "cartoon nut" you seem quite oblivious to how their done.

Very much agreed, elephantmarch. Anyone who assumes that animation direction entails nothing more than sitting around all day drinking tea while other people scramble to meet deadlines is really, REALLY speaking out of turn. 2hotinaz, do a little research before you go running your mouth like that! I would even argue that animation direction is MORE difficult and time-consuming than live-action film direction.
