Uploaded by: FeitenFan
Video Description:
Here is another from the Butterfield Rockpalast show with Buzzy Feiten in the band. The other guitar player is Peter Atanasoff and he plays some great stuff throught the show. I believe he is with Rickee Lee Jones now? Buzz (and Peter) play some great solos here. Also, this Butterfield guy ain't too bad either. RIP

My understanding is that Buzz put this band together for an ailing Butterfield .. Buzz himself having very recently re emerged from difficult times . It speaks volumes about Buzz I'd say that he invited a player of the calibre of Peter A to join the fun .
fabulous stuff .. vintage Buzz of the period.

Yes, that is my understanding also. Peter A is definately a 1st rate player also. After reading how Butterfield was having his "problems" I was very impressed with his playing and singing. When it counted, he came through with flying colors. Let's hope a video of East-West pops up someday with the might Bloomfield !!

Good stuff...! Last time I saw Butter was at the Rodeo Bar in NYC, shortly before he died. Shame... what a talented guy...! Oh, and Buzzy ain't no slouch, neither!

Shortly after Paul died I remember reading about a tribute show that took place in San Fran of which many people played including Feiten. I don't have any video nor audio of that. I am sure there is something around from that tribute show.

Oh god. Been looking for clips from this evening. I watched it back then, and I have been dreaming of this concert ever since. What a fantastic set. Are you able to post the rest of the tracks?
Great post, thanks.

I'd just like to add that it appears to be the late Phillp Wilson on drums, and possibly Stanley Clarke's cousin John Lee on bass, both playin' their asses off!

Hi FeitenFan
Peter Astonoff is playing with Titu and Turatula now. In an interwiev with German Television, where Tito and Turantula performed, he was remembering the concert with Paul Butterfield. He is a great leadguitarist too.
Best Regards Carsten

Yes, Peter Astonoff is a great player for sure. I had never heard of him until this video and I was pleasantly surprised.

Peter Atanasoff is incredible. The musical highlight of my years in LA was watching him play with Jake Labotz at the Lava Lounge. He is the strongest, sturdiest, expert-while-remaining-modest guitarist I've have the privilege of witnessing live. Anything he writes or plays on (check out Esthzer Balint's FLICKER) is sure to be gold.

Yes, Peter is real good. I was not familier with him until I got this video. The way he looks on this video reminds me of Kim Simmonds around 1971 or so (physically, not musically).

Buzzy and Paul trading solos around 3:30 shows how a harp player - if he's got great tone and energy - can "hang" with a guitar player, even when what that guitar player is playing is technically more "advanced." Great stuff! God, I miss Paul.

I disagree on two ... ( 1 month ago by AbuChowdah)
I disagree on two points: first that the guitar player is technically better (that's a typical guitar-player's comment). And second regarding Butterfields' tone. That tone is shocking. Waspy and thin. He had way better tone on some of his LPs. For great tone, do a Tube search on Kim Wilson.
AbuChowdah, I did ... ( 1 month ago by SianReynolds)
AbuChowdah, I did not say the guitar player is technically "better." I wrote that what he's playing HERE (i.e. the notes he chooses) is technically more "advanced." Has nothing to do with soul, etc.
Love Kim Wilson, but he and PB have very different tones. From a POV of tone, phrasing, musical approach, etc., Kim vs. Butter is like apples vs. oranges. Lastly, your're right that Butter had way better tone on his LPs. (BTW, I'm not a guitar player - I play harp.)

To each his own. I don't rate Kim Wilson myself. I was refering to Butter's tone in general not on this tape. This show was when Butter was having many "personal" problems in his life. Buzz Feiten was asked to put a band together with 5 days notice. With the conversion to mp4 the sound suffers. Kim Wilson can't touch Butter's tone on the Butterfield albums I think.

I wondered. Even though Lynott played with a pick and this guy is slapping with his thumb. It looks so much like him though.
