Stevie and i are about the same age, I remember when we were about 16 I was thinking how great this guy is to be in Traffic, and a kid like me. He has never sounded better. When you got it you got it.

Amazing, sounds better than ever, and looks happy and healthy... always seemed like a humble and real person, and agree that his guitar playing was underrated, but the few times he played guitar it was just like this...superb, tasteful, soulful, absolutely beautiful, just like his singing. He has a Hendrix-like feel, of course that wasn't his main instrument so he can't be compared in terms of speed or Jimi's explosions of muticolored magic; I just mean the absolute beauty of it all....

Winwood has a voice ...( 4 months ago by tmmmviii)
Winwood has a voice that sounds ancient and yet very modern. It has a folk quality even though it is very soulful. His guitar playing has gotten better and is very lyrical and his organ playing is absolutely unreal - it was that way even when he was a kid on Gimme Some Lovin.
As a live performer, he is extremely powerful - like Neil Young or Van Morrison, although Van is more inconsistent.

You're absolutely right on almost all of your critique. Where I disagree is that Steve's been a fine guitarist for a long time. Just listen to his version when he was with Traffic and you'll find his guitar play is identical to this version.

Ever since his breakout onto the world stage with Spencer Davis Group, Steve Winwood has been a great vocalist. His chops on the organ were so good that he was compared to Ray Charles at the age of 18 with "Gimme Some Lovin" and "I'm A Man". The Traffic music was special and showed how versatile he really is as a musician, who has made solo albums and can play all instruments.
