Video Description:
Brian Wilson originally intended to sing lead vocal on 'God Only Knows' but in the end he sacrificed the lead vocal to his brother Carl: "Well, I thought I was gonna do it. As the song progressed, I said, 'Hey, I feel kind of natural doing this.' But when we completed creating the song, I said my brother Carl will probably be able to impart the message better than I could, so I sacrificed that one. But he had a good time singing it."

Forty-one years later, and this song is still just as beautiful and uplifting as ever. There will always be an argument whether it was a good decision to Let Carl sing this one, but listening to the 'vocals only' track (from the same collection as the 'Brian sings lead' track), its hard not to find the beauty of the lyric and music matched perfectly. BW IS a genius.

people ( the general , idiotic public , that is ) laugh at me for liking the Beach boys... Wilson's vocal harmony/melodies were technically incredible and this song makes me cry.... most music these days makes me cringe or cry for help... just heard a brilliant documentary about the making of pet sounds and it was no mean feat... thank god for the "wrecking crew" who get zero publicity BUT made it ALL happen as Brian wanted... XX

Anyone lame enough to laugh at you for diggin The Beach Boys obviously have not an ounce of class. Just listening to this beautiful song brings tears to my eyes. Brian Wilson has more talent in his pinky finger than most songwriters could ever dream of having! The Beach Boys were great then and their STILL just as great now!

As far as I know, there is no Pet Sounds-era version with Brian singing lead. I used to frequent the Cabinessence message board, and this was a point of discussion some years ago. Brad Elliot, who is something of an obesessive expert, claimed at that time that the description on the PS boxed set that "Brian sings lead" is wrong. And when I listened to it again, I realized it's not even debatable. It is clearly, clearly Carl. Thanks for agreeing with me. I like being agreed with!

Why all the debate about who is singing this version of "God Only Knows"? The description PLAINLY states that it is BRIAN!!! Don't you people believe what is stated at the top of the video? Do you feel that MrTomaX, who posted this video, does not know what he is talking about? I listened to it ONE time and I can easily hear that it is NOT Carl. In the end, Brian sacrificed this song to him, but this is Brian's original take.
