Miramax Films: The year is 1795 and young Jane Austen is a feisty 20-year-old and emerging writer who already sees a world beyond class and commerce, beyond pride and prejudice, and dreams of doing what was then nearly unthinkable - marrying for love. Naturally, her parents are searching for a wealthy, well-appointed husband to assure their daughter's future social standing. They are eyeing Mr. Wisley, nephew to the very formidable, not to mention very rich, local aristocrat Lady Gresham, as a prospective match. But when Jane meets the roguish and decidedly non-aristocratic Tom Lefroy, sparks soon fly along with the sharp repartee. His intellect and arrogance raise her ire - then knock her head over heels. Now, the couple, whose flirtation flies in the face of the sense and sensibility of the age, is faced with a terrible dilemma. If they attempt to marry, they will risk everything that matters - family, friends and fortune.

| Loved it. McAvoy is wonderful, a dream. I read all Austen's books and short stories, and I understand that Jane made a choise to stay single and free, in a time when the man was the head of the couple, took care of everything and all the decisions. She chose the "independent thought", instead of getting married without affection. |

| How could you know that as all the letters between them she burned or instructed Cassandra to burn upon her death? There are two remaining...as far as I know...and enough in those to fuel speculation. Due to her "forwardness" around him, which was documented by others, they were separated. He WAS her first daliance with the opposite sex, that's accepted. |

| Based on her being the premiere female English writer and his being the Lord Chief Justice of Ireland during the potatoe famine...they were probably significant personalities...and electric together. It's not a bio-pic. And it does beg the question, how can she write about love and relationships having never experienced either? I'd rather entertain that question than swallow the stoic, spinster image of her which, frankly, I think is equally inaccurate in depicting who she really was. |
