steveandidiamin. . . schumacher was and always will be a bare faced cheat and lucky in his reign. Had ayrton been around a different story would have been told. The others you mention are worthy drivers. As with Gilles, Jim Clark was cut down in his prime. Just because a racer hasn't pinnacled doesn't make him any less worthy. Gilles is a legend, not because he died, because of who he was before, and the races he raced, and the car control he had. Points on a board in this case mean. . . . nil

Absolutely agree with Waterfall. Points on the board do not mean every thing. Gilles, Senna, Ronnie and Jim Clark were the greatest, all had the extra magic that took them above the rest. Interesting that three of them were all round nice guys and one nice when he was away from an F1 car. All had very magnetic personalitys.

i dont know if he was the best, hard to say but he was special, he was what a F1 racer should be... he mus be having fun in heaven racing with fangio, senna, clark novulari and many others, i always like to imagine those races, goodbye Gilles

So many drivers we skilled and talented, it seems tedious to try to elect a winner. To me, Villeneuve was the one that produced the most joyful driving, this very unscientific criteria is the most important of all and makes him to driver I regard most highly.

Villeneuve for ever. my all time number one racing driver, no one will ever come close. he was everything a grand prix driver should be without letting the money and everything else go to his head, he always kept both feet on the ground and remained a human being. But he could drive a car like no one else before or since!The fastest driver of his era, and possibly ever! Legend!

Nice tribute, well done. For me Gilles (RIP)was and always will be the best. Nobody had/has the sheer natural talent (control and speed) that Gilles displayed. He was bore to race and left us with great memories (watkins glen, Zandvoort and Dijon in particuar. Merci Gilles

Championships mean little, and they meant even less to Gilles. Gilles was everything a race car driver should hope to emulate...every time he sat in that seat, he gave 150%, he almost never complained, he never let his fame go to his head, he was great to his fans, and first and foremost, his family came first. Though I never had half his talent, Gilles was always my role model in motor racing, and I still carry a replica of his helmet paint on mine.
