Juan Pablo Montoya: a pictorial tribute pt.2 (2001-2006)

Video Description:
Second in a three part pictorial tribute to my favourite racing driver, Colombia's Juan Pablo Montoya.
Part two covers Juan Pablo's stint in Formula 1, the self proclaimed "pinnacle" of motorsport. Having impressed in many categories beforehand with his incredible car control and raw speed, JPM came into F1 with much hype. Ultimately a number of factors prevented him from landing the world champion
ship, but there were still some great successes and some memorable incidents - both good and bad! 2001: top rookie, winning one race and setting three pole positions driving for Williams BMW. Led his third GP after an audacious pass on Michael Schumacher. Sixth in the championship. 2002: 3rd in th
e championship, but with no wins in a year dominated by Ferrari, the Williams weak in race trim. Still secured seven pole positions, including five in a row, and set the fastest ever average lap speed at Monza, a record that still stands today. Married wife Connie during off-season. 2003: 3rd in th
e championship for Williams-BMW with wins at Monaco and Hockenheim and one pole position. After an immense summer period, and with just three races to go, he lay one point off the championship lead but Ferrari protested the Michelin tyres and the Williams/JPM momentum was stemmed. Two engine failure
s from winning positions also proved very costly. Announced move to McLaren for 2005 at years end. 2004: Disappointing year in failed Williams "walrus" design. No poles but a win in the last race at Interlagos in a straight fight with future teammate Kimi Raikkonen. 2005: Moved to McLaren mercedes
for 2005, but disappointment soon followed. Broke shoulder in a motocross incident after two races and missed a couple of events recuperating. Competing most of the yearwith a dodgy shoulder, Montoya took three wins at Silverstone, Monza and Interlagos and a couple of pole's but the year was disapp
ointing, inconsistent and exposed slight incompatibilities in the JPM/McLaren partnership as Raikkonen flourished. 2006: This would prove to be the final curtain for Montoya's F1 career, as he failed to adapt to the understeering McLaren and fell out with the team. The spark seemed to have been los
t, with little in the way of interest occurring. Two podiums were accrued, but after round ten at Indianapolis, where Montoya was blamed for a first lap shunt that eliminated numerous cars (including his teammate), Montoya decided he had had enough and got in touch with former employer Chip Ganassi.
From here, JPM was offered the chance to compete in NASCAR - a tremendous and difficult new challenge, but perhaps the tonic needed for a by now miserable Montoya. An announcement was made to the press shortly after and Montoya was promptly fired by McLaren boss Ron Dennis.
