Good point about my conformity. And of course you're right, that is a sign of adopting social attitudes Re: enjoying CB. You're right. There is nothing wrong with a non-discerning person enjoying them. One cannot expect the masses to be discriminate. That's just not going to happen. HOWEVER, the
'jazz' trombone solo is truly awful. Poor ideas, bad rhythm (esp. rushing), unstylistic, sloppy, no motif development whatsoever, really one of the worst I've ever heard.
If you want to hear ... ( 2 weeks ago by indoctus41)
If you want to hear a solid dixie trombone player, search "The Lawrence Welk Show: Jazz Me Blues `65" At 2:06, Bob Havens plays a great solo that has all the elements that were lacking in the CB trombone solo.
You know, maybe the CB is right. Why should they put all that effort into creating high quality stylistically accurate performances when NO ONE CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE ANYWAY.
So what you're ... ( 2 weeks ago by troopjunior)
So what you're saying is that somebody with a real sense of musicality isn't allowed to enjoy CB? It's also very narrow-minded of you to base your hatred for a group of talented musicians on "sloppy" solos when they obviously have talent. Maybe not necessarily when it comes to improvisation, but they can obviously produce music with very few errors and with very good tone.

troopjunior:
I think I'll tell them to stop practicing bcause most, not all mind you, but most of their sycophantic audience can't hear the difference anyway. By the way if you've read my posts I never criticized their abilities but I did criticize the clowning around and the pseudo-jazz.

go trombone!!!! (lol that's what i play in band at my highschool!)
how in the world ... ( 1 week ago by troopjunior)
how in the world did you just generalize their audience as sycophantic? i would honestly like to know where you got that from. and by the way, if you've noticed, you're trying to put down five people who make money doing what they love to do, and have a LOT of fun to do it. so i honestly doubt that they would take any of your criticism seriously.
troopjunior: You ... ( 1 week ago by indoctus41)
troopjunior: You seem to be struggling with the topic, so I'll try to help you define what the argument is: a) CB uses a jazz idiom in many pieces, but they don't have the experience, the knowledge nor the ability to play jazz stylistically. b) Their clowning around detracts from the musical presentation. The following is completely irrelevant to the argument: a) They make money. b) They love what they do. c) They have fun. d) CB is unconcerned with criticism.
Don't tell me ... ( 1 week ago by troopjunior)
Don't tell me what's irrelevant. I am not arguing with you about whether or not they can play jazz. I am just saying that they are performers and their main focus is to PUT ON A SHOW. And they do a damned good job of it. And I would really like you to answer my question. Why did you call their audience sycophantic? Did you do a scientific survey and go around to all of them and say "hey, are you here because you're a kiss-ass?" I honestly doubt that you did stop making stupid generalizations.
I honestly doubt ... ( 1 week ago by troopjunior)
I honestly doubt that you did, so stop making stupid generalizations.*
troopjunior (pt 1): ... ( 1 week ago by indoctus41)
troopjunior (pt 1): You can argue about whatever you want. But if you want to discuss my criticisms, then you at least should know what my criticisms are, and you don't seem to. You head off into totally irrelevant comments about how they love what they do (which frankly you don't know that unless you know them personally) and that they make money (well duh) and that they are having fun (maybe and maybe not - they've gone through a truckload of trumpet players over the years)

answer my question please
troopjunior (pt 2): ... ( 1 week ago by indoctus41)
troopjunior (pt 2): I would consider audience members sycophantic when they dismember their critical mind to the point that when they hear something extremely questionable, like this improvised trombone solo, that they think it's spectacular. Not all opinions are created equal. How can you form an educated opinion when you're so goddamn lazy you can't even search a Bob Haven's solo right here on YouTube. Even you would have to admit, that's pretty fuckin' lazy.
you're such a ... ( 1 week ago by troopjunior)
you're such a pompous ass. telling people what they should and shouldn't enjoy. who they SHOULD go listen to. their so lazy because they want to listen to this person but don't go listen to that person (even though they may have never even heard of them) i pity you. i don't see how you could live with such a humongous superiority complex.

troopjunior: I find your intellectual level depressingly low. I was hoping for at least some meaningful dialogue, but clearly you're incapable of it at this point. Perhaps the CB performances match your intellectual level at this stage of your life. I suggest you stick with CB and continue to believe that they make great music. Perhaps that will make you the happiest. I'm certain that at some point in the future you will have an opportunity to improve your thinking processes. Best of luck!

omgz you guys,
here's the bottom line. canadian brass is a brass quartet who plays entertainment shows, basically comedy type stuff. so what if the trombone thing wasnt up to YOUR standards, but who the crap cares because i thought it was awesome. this isnt a TROMBONE group, if it was, im sure everyone would exp
ect the trombonist to be the greatest ever, so why does the trombone solo have to be such a big deal? i was definately entertained and the performance served its purpose.

rachthebandgeek: I agree with much of what you are saying. What you realize, and most don't seem to accept, is that the bone solo is substandard compared with real dixieland jazz solos. You're right that many find this stuff entertaining, although I find it tedious, which is just my own opinion. I would only disagree with you in the sense of letting them off the hook with the poor trombone solo. I think they thought the audience wouldn't notice or care.

Indoctus 41:
please just drop it. the trombone solo, even if it is not up to your standards, or its not standard for dixieland music, no one honestly gives a shit! its just a solo. that means he can do with it whatever he wants. if you will please just stop being an ass, the rest of us can enjoy the video without having to bother with idiots like you, who think they know everything about everything!
THANK YOU! AND GOODNIGHT!

EuphoniumPlayer08: Well if YOU don't give a "shit" how they sound, then you can understand why THEY don't give a shit either. As I said before, why should they spend any time creating quality dixieland performances when there are so many like you out there who can't tell the difference. .

What I'm really ... ( 5 days ago by indoctus41)
What I'm really being told is that in order to be on this board I have to agree with everybody, like what everyone else likes, shouldn't express my own opinions, shouldn't point out any faults with CB and that all the ad hominem attacks against me are justified because I'm outnumbered. Isn't this attitude very similar to Hitler's Fascist Germany, "Like what I like, or vanish" Isn't it a little eerie that conformity is so important to you?
