The worst nuclear ... ( 1 month ago by Gammaclipper)
The worst nuclear disaster in human history and yet it resulted in less than 60 dead. 47 were accident workers and 9 were kids that got thyroid cancer and were not treated. The WHO says that no more than 9,000 would ever be at high risk for cancer, mostly thyroid because of the iodine. A far cry from GPs arbitrary claims and ol' Kofi.
Also, it was only 30-40x both nukes used on Japan, not over 100x. This was cartoonish and skewed.

First of all, it was 20 years ago and the Russians had very poor SubStandard building codes. The nuke plant was not built with the external shell meant to stop any internal melt down. Technology has improved alot in 20 years.

Chernobyl was ... ( 1 hour ago by borninshadow)
Chernobyl was basically a checklist of "Things not to do when running a nuclear reactor" rather than any sort of systemic problem with nuclear reactor designs. It stemmed from lax Soviet safety policies and problems with regulating the plant itself. Modern reactors are not only safer, but run under much tighter conditions. Lessons learned from tragedies of the past I'd say. -Aaron, would like to visit Chernobyl some day
