Did I Just Contract HIV? Symptoms of Primary HIV Infection

Uploaded by: AIDSvideos
Video Description:
It's sometimes possible to recognize when you've recently contracted HIV from signs and symptoms such as fever, rash, or swollen lymph nodes. This video will teach you how to recognize signs and symptoms of primary HIV infection that are experienced by between 40 and 90% of individuals after they are first infected with HIV. Primary HIV infection occurs during the first few weeks or months after a person first becomes infected with HIV. Symptoms include rash and/or fevers, possibly in combination with one or more of the following symptoms: malaise (which is a general feeling of weakness, discomfort, and fatigue), loss of appetite, weight loss, a sore throat, sores in the mouth, joint or muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, diarrhea, fatigue, night sweats, nausea and vomiting, headache, or genital sores. The symptoms usually last from seven to ten days, and rarely more than two weeks. There is an incubation period of a few days to a few weeks between when the person was exposed to HIV and when the symptoms begin. If you have any of these symptoms and think there's even the slightest chance you might have been exposed to HIV, such as through recent sexual activity or sharing a needle, even with someone who you believe is HIV negative, you should see a doctor and ask to be tested for HIV. When you go to the doctor with any of these symptoms, it's very important to mention any risk factors you may have for HIV so they could test you. If you have ever had unprotected sex, even once, have used injection drugs, or think you might be experiencing primary HIV infection, make sure to tell your doctor. See our video "The Importance of Condom Compliance" for details. A study of married couples in which one partner was HIV+ and the other was HIV- showed that "typical" condom use (most of the time, but not necessarily every time) reduced HIV transmission by 85%. Among those who used condoms every time for every act, there was no HIV transmission at all. See our video "Some Ways You Can Contract HIV and the Risk of Each One" for risk estimates for unprotected sex by sexual practice.

I had gay unprotected anal sex....this was my first time ever having sex....my partner had never had sex before either. Is there a possibility that I have contracted any sexually transmitted diseases?

This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. Call the nearest embassy/consulate for your government and ask them to recommend a nearby clinic. Spain is a developed country; you should get competent care if you go to a major clinic.

This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. Yes, it's possible to contract HIV in that scenario. It's even possible to contract HIV through receiving oral sex WITHOUT bite injuries or broken skin. See our videos "What's the Risk I've Contracted HIV?" and "Some Ways You Can Contract HIV and the Risk of Each One" for details. See a doctor. Get evaluated. Follow their instructions. If you choose to be sexually active use a condom next time and consider the option of not having sex with people you don't know.

This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. I'm not sure what's the shortest time after possible HIV exposure that it would take before it would be possible to experience symptoms of primary HIV infection. Go see a doctor and discuss your symptoms, risk factors, and sexual history with the doctor. Get tested for HIV and follow their instructions for any follow-up testing.

This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. Is there a possibility? Sure! Examples: your partner could have (1) injected drugs and contracted a STD such as HIV that way; (2) not been truthful about their claimed lack of sexual experience; (3) contracted HIV through a blood transfusion or via mother-to-child transmission. See a doctor; get tested; and use a condom if you choose to be sexually active in the future.

Well, first of all, do everything possible to avoid contracting HIV, but don't kill yourself if you contract it! See our videos "Is HIV a Death Sentence?" and "'If I'm HIV Positive, I'm Going to Commit Suicide!' (Don't)" and "Personal Testimonial of Cory Norlund" for details. If people with HIV follow their doctor's instructions and take care of their general health, with a little luck they can live a normal lifespan and have good quality of life.

I have a friend who does a lot of drugs, and sleeps with many girls who have not been tested. Could I get HIV from him if his blood got into my open cut?
This is Eric; I'm ... ( 5 days ago by AIDSvideos)
This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. If your friend has HIV in his blood, then yes, direct contact between his blood and your open cut might be a possible route of HIV transmission (as well as other things).

This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. It's impossible for anyone to diagnose HIV status over the Internet. Go to a medical doctor, explain your symptoms, risk factors and exposure history, get tested for HIV, and follow the doctor's instructions.
This is Eric; I'm ... ( 3 days ago by AIDSvideos)
This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. You are correct that there's sometimes no way to know for sure whether you were just exposed to HIV or not (e.g. if your partner's HIV status is unknown). However, our video doesn't say that you can know this for sure. Rather, we say that if you THINK you MAY have been exposed to HIV, get tested. I'm glad we agree about the importance of people getting tested for HIV.
