Blues Harp From the Crossroads (Gussow.027)

Uploaded by: KudzuRunner
Video Description:
More late-night, front-seat Mississippi conversation, oriented towards early- and mid-journey bluesmen: the pros and cons of jam sessions; using iTunes to master new repertoire; why you need a guitar-man (or guitar-woman); daring to say "The hell with Little Walter!" when new performance contexts demand it. Bonus track: Jimmy Smith's "Chicken Shack," using overblows.
For a series of skill-graded video tutorials and tabs focusing on classic blues harmonica repertoire by Sonny Terry, Little Walter, Paul Butterfield, and others, please visit: http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com

Don't know what's different from the other lessons, but this vid doesn't want to load properly, it take 3 minutes to get 19 seconds..is it just me? I'm using a powerbook
Your discussion on ... ( 1 year ago by ElvinFyre)
Your discussion on jam sessions is so true. I've declined to play many times, and those on stage will believe you think yer too good to play with them. If the rhythm falls apart during a solo, you'll be the one that caused it.

man great advice for people, look for your own sound...i know that could take years but is the good part of it, the searching and studying--
you play great man, and for shure you have your own style

Adam, This stuff ... ( 1 year ago by mississippisaxman)
Adam, This stuff you are talkin about in the last few sessions is where I've been for sometime and I knew my style wasn't like the old masters (close but different) I never wanted to use much it for fear of rockin the proverbial Blues Boat. So I came to a bridge that I couldn't or wouldn't cross and I have stagnated since. Thanks for the info and the encouragement to do my own thing.

Excellent. Just remember: Musselwhite/Estrin/Wilson/Harman/Piazza came up in a time when they had to prove that white guys could actually play the damned thing. That's been done now. Now it's time to take that accrued knowledge and technique and actually dare to play new & modern blues. The X-games guys--white boys, a fair number of them--have been radical and inventive from the get-go. So was Little Walter, when he plugged in. It's time to throw down, without apologies.

Thanks for your kind words, Adam. It a pleasure and an eye-opening experience to be learning from you.(should I say "mind-opening"?) It is very, very much appreciated.
Hey Adam..really ... ( 11 months ago by HarpLips)
Hey Adam..really liked these 3 crossroads vids. Dead on about the jams, having your own style and who to listen to. When I started playing, the only harp playing I'd heard was from Blues Brothers. It gave me somewhere to start. I'm getting comfortable with my own style, get to sit in with pros and starting to get the odd paying gig. I started playing when I was 39 and I'm 44 now, so...you ain't too old to start. Appreciate the tips, shortcuts and your enthusiasm. Thanks!

Man you are so right! Not only your advice is for bluesharp, but for every musician. I'm a young blues guitar player myself and unfortunately their are only a few people in Holland who understand this. Hope to see you some day live and if you ever come to Holland we should do some gigs together.
