Where are the striped shirts and weejuns?
Acoutrement not withstanding, the instrumentation is ULTRA cool on this one...John Stewart is playing a BLONDE Vega PS-5, Bob Shane plays his 3/4 Martin dreadnought, and Nick Reynolds works out on a SUPER RARE Martin 8-string Tenor!

This performance embodies what the original Kingston Trio was all about. A one microphone thing for three voices and three instruments with Dean "Mad Dog" Reilly playing upright bass off-camera. For ten years the group had this much fun and energy while touring virtually non-stop. They are one great piece of Americana!

That's a full size D-35-one of the first, I'd guess as they had just been introduced. John Stewart still has that blonde Vega. Nick's guitar was an eight string conversion, which he later had converted back to four strings. What show is this from?

Of course I was a BIG David "Buck" Wheat fan...I loved his nylon string duets with Dave Guard. It has been said that Buck Wheat was Dave's 420 connection too...look at the Whiskey Hill Singers cover art...Dave and Buck are just baked!

From the July 1966 Sahara Tahoe shoe..."Twice Upon A Time".
John Stewart ALSO played a Gibson RB175 longneck...but the blonde Vega is the one. Deering has reissued 4 Kingston Trio banjos for the 50th Anniversary...Dave Guard, John Stewart and George Grove long necks, and a Bob Shane plectrum...all with Tubaphones...and all $6995 each!

Stewart played an RB-180 around the time of "#16", but quickly went back to the Vega. The 180 had a flathead ring and a bound neck. The 175 had a brass hoop and no binding-sort of Gibson's answer to the Vega Folk Ranger longneck.

John Stewart sadly died yesterday. I uploaded a memorial video today, but it has not been posted yet.

I'm curious to know if there ever was such a thing as a mass produced 8-string tenor guitar. Being one of the few people left on the planet who actually plays a 4-string one, it would be nice to own something a little louder.

A friend of mine bought one of Bob Shanes dreadnoughts...it had a large raggdy-ass hole under the pick-guard from years of being strummed..and it is far and away the loudest acustic guitar I have ever heard!
