As I said before, If you are that bad a driver, you are a serious danger to all other road users (that includes pedestrians where I come from, though I dont know if it does in the U.S.)
A better alternative would simply be to take all the morons who would crash like this off the road. If a loved one has died in this way, it doesnt matter what you feel, it was thier fault.

I don't know how old this movie is, but every trailer I've ever seen(here at my job here in Belgium(Europe)) has sideguards and rearguards. And like someone else said: Accidents can happen, but when you drive, you drive, no calling, eating or anything distracting you can avoid. At least, that's my opinion.

I'm a trucker in the U.S. and have been struck at high speed by a drunk driver..
He hit the rear of my trailer at the D.O.T. bar, and still mananged to get entangled underneath my trailer.. It was a real mess and he ended up losing his right arm.. I would be in support of any adaptations to equipment that would reduce the risk of serious injury..

I drive from New Jersey to Long Island New York 5 days a week. I leave at about 2:00 in the morning. From I95 all the way up to the throgs neck bridge tractor-trailers and large trucks are everywhere. I have been travailing the same route for about 3 months and have only seen 3 accidents involving tractor-trailers. The problem isn't so much no protection guards its the drivers of passenger cars, suvs, and pickups. I feel safer driving next to tractor-trailers than those vehicles mentioned above.

You maybe wondering why. Well let me answer that. The drivers of those vehicles are assholes plain and simple. What part of "if you can't see my mirrors I can't see you" don't people understand ? Here is one more "caution this vehicle makes wide turns." Hey look at that 80,000lb tractor-trailer let me cut him off. After all 3,000lb car vs 80,000lb tractor-trailer will end in the car's victory. Yea ok.

You people also have to understand when you do something stupid and cause the trailer driver to jam on his brakes it make a bad situation worse. When a tractor-trailer driver jams on his brakes the wheels come to a stop. However the momentum of 80,000lbs causes the truck to slide a great distance before coming to a complete stop.

maybe people should fucking smarten up and pay attention instead of talking on there cell phones.bottom line if you go underneath the back of a truck that had to stop on the highway then you obviously weren't keeping a safe following distance which makes it your fault anyways. since a truck can stop as fast as a car theres lots of time for reaction.

You can only keep a safe following distance to the vehicle in front of you. If a truck nearby in another lane crashes and the trailer slides out to block the highway there is nothing you can do. p.s. "there cell phones" should be "their" "theres" should be "there's". Smarten up! This was a serious video about saving the lives of many innocent people.

The issue does not lie with the industry or with gov. It belongs with the drivers, both truck and car. Pay ATTENTION to your driving. I drive tractor trailers, and I can't tell you the countless time ppl have nearly taken me out with their poor driving. If ppl only knew how many times I have taken action to save their lives. Driving is not a right. I do it because its my job. Consider this, every trucker has more miles backing up then any of you got going forward. Drive smart.

Just wouldn't work. If there were guards on the sides like the ones on the back of trailers, they would not get across raised railroad tracks or some raised intersections. This would prevent the trucks from going where they need to go, and getting where they need to go is their only purpose.

I see what your getting at, but I also have to agree with some of the other people who responeded. The drivers need to put their phones down and pay attention to their driving, and with the side gaurds they'd have problems going over hightened railroad crossings. If they where to put side guards on, theyd have to put on other safety measures to protect the truck and trailer, like putting wheels in the center of the trailer so they can make it over the crossing.

im a uk driver and those crash rails do save lives! we have speed humps over here and the gaurds dont get caught on them! i dont know about crossings over in the u.s.a. but if there that high low loaders wouldnt make any money would they? they are a good idea especially for motorbikes. keep em claen boys and girls!
