I'd kind of like to hear McLaughlin play a little more. These old clips are a trip. Thanks for posting!
He's playing ... ( 9 months ago by jolcom)
He's playing through effects pedals and a tube (valve) amp--it's not supposed to sound like "smooth jazz" prettiness. It's the sound he wanted, something nasty to match the distorted electric guitar of McLaughlin.

This video is awesomw. I love the piano solo, although there are mistakes. Jan rocks live. Billy rocks out at the end.

unbelievable he did that on purpose, there's nothing left of the rhodes sound.
Sound is not the ... ( 8 months ago by jolcom)
Sound is not the only reason to choose an instrument. Remember the date of this video, about 1973. The kinds of choices that keyboard players have today did not exist. A portable monophonic synthesizer, with no touch sensitivity, was something brand new. In order to get the sound he wanted, a Rhodes with altered sound was all that was available.

Somehow Jan Hammer seems the least competent soloist (of course Rick Laird doesn't really count), and his sound isnt to good either. Personally I think the style as heard on Coltrane's A Love Supreme would have suited this quite well.

Wrong. What are called tubes in the US are called valves in the UK. You might be thinking of the difference between tube and transistor amps. Look it up.

i strongly disagree. though in this video hammer isin't stretching himself as far as he can, i find his solo very compelling and different from what i'm used to. also he takes credit for originating the modal pentatonic style of soloing which became one of john's biggest trademarks, so i wouldn;t underestimate him

How long did McLaughlin live away from England at the time of this? Because he doesn't sound British to me on here. This must be from between 1972-74, and I assume he moved in the '60's.

He appeared on Miles Davis' Bitches Brew album in, I think, 1969.

Probably a mixture of his time in America, drugs, his dabblings with the teachings of Sri Chinmoy and a little pinch of pretention :)

I thought that too. So I wasn't far off. He doesn't really sound that American either. He just sounds fucked up. He struck me as the pretentious type.
