Video Description:
The worst accident in motor racing history happened at the 1955 running of the 24 hours of Le Mans. A collision between a Mercedes and an Austin-Healy sent the Mercedes' engine, hood and steering assembly in to the crowd. Nearly 80 spectators died instantly.

Mercedes withdrew from le mans for 45 whole years due to this accident just to return in 1998 and have their CLR go airbourne not once but twice at the muslane kink nearly killing the drivers in both instances and they have withdrawn again this time maybe for good

My grand-dads were in America,at the time,so they probably had to read about it in the papers.You can't see too much in this footage,which is probably a good thing.The one shot of the smouldering body,on the track,was un-nerving enough.

Hate to say but Mike Hawthorn is a Piece of shit! He provocates the acident and then hes smiling after the race because he won, because he killed his opponents cause they were driving a fucking kraut car. Best Example for what hate causes

What's more sad is Fangio's account where he said Levegh raised his hand to warn him and the others behind him of the upcoming crash, knowing he was about to die. It likely saved Fangios life, he basically weaved and spun down the straight through the carnage. All respect to Pierre Levegh, a hell of a man and driver.

Thats impossible mate. Levegh was the one who was launched into the air off the back of the Jaguar. He was thrown out the car and into the crowd, dying instantly.

I was just reading about it, they finished the race to keep all the spectators there because if everyone started leaving the rescue vehicles wouldnt have been able to get there as easily

Actually, no. It's a spectator but nevertheless, a burnt corpse is a horrific sight. :-(
This disaster remains the worst accident in motor racing history, claiming the life of driver Pierre Levegh and 82 spectators. Since safety is now light years ahead of 1955, this "record" is unlikely to ever be broken. May they all rest in peace.
