Beadbud5000 - This is not any kind of variation on anything on the first album, or any Soft Machine record. It was one of many K. Ayers songs used in Soft Machine sets, and eventually made it onto record (recorded by Kev and his band) as B-side to a Kevin Ayers single in the 70s. Not on LP until the Bam Caruso label compiled the LP mentioned by ttex
The Kevin Ayers ... ( 9 months ago by zbelm)
The Kevin Ayers track had the title 'Soon Soon Soon'; live recordings by the Soft Machine of the song usually take the title 'We Know What You Mean'.

Daevid Allen was in the band in '67, but had to leave them that year when he was unable to re-enter the UK. The first LP wasn't recorded until 1968.

Oops, got mixed up - I didn't know about 'Odd Ditties' - I thought ttex was referring to a record I now realise is called 'Banana Productions - the best of Kevin Ayers'. On Harvest/Bam Caruso ( Ithink.)

Hearing the guitar makes me wish there was more of an emphasis earlier for a guitar player... In a more heavy format though, not just the backing chord progression.

Unfortunately, the Soft Machine ended up only being a trio in 1967. Kevin Ayers played either the guitar OR bass in each song. Daevid Allen was their original guitar player, but had Visa problems and had to leave the group.

Way ahead of their time and Mike Ratledge was just one hell of a keyboard player. Never was the same after Robert Wyatt's unfortunate accident. Tragic shame. They blow so many others into three shades of sh**!
