Tori's first single was from...1980? You're being a bit disingenuous if you're referring to "Baltimore" (a Debbie-Gibsonish track released locally when she was 16). There were no other works from Tori for another 9 years...and some of those 1988 songs show a marked influence from Kate, who had released 5 albums by then. They are 5 years apart in age, but calling them musical contemporaries to disprove Kate's influence (an influence that Tori actually acknowledges, by the way) is quite a stretch.

Not deliberately disingenuous. I simply used Google and Wikipedia to check and correct my ageing memory before I posted. And I was not trying to to disprove anything. Yes Tori sounds a lot like Kate sometimes. And contemporaneous, to me, means a lot more than time. I am contemporaneous with Grace Darling, but only because we are both Lifeboat Crew.

did you put this together yourself - the songs are scarey. Kate is much better - Tori has an annoying "snag" to her voice every now and then. Must be a seppo thing - me being frae the auld country and all that

There is one thing in being influenced by somebody, and out and out plagiarism, which Tori is obviously guilty of. If I were Kate Bush I'd sue Tori for identity theft. However, Kate's far too nice to do that!!!!

Heh! I only think it's identity theft if Tori is actually pretending to be Kate, which she isn't. She's not damaged Kate's career in any way either. They happen to sound a bit similar bar the accents, but then Phil Collins sounded a bit like Peter Gabriel when he took over as vocalist for Genesis. I like Kate and Tori btw. They're both amazing talents. I'd like to hear them sing a real duet... and now I bet someone's going to make me look a real idiot and tell me they already have! ^_-

I don't think they sound similar -Kate's voice is much purer, more melodic. My point is that Tori has stolen concepts, images, lines and phrases from Kate's songs/ creative works. In my book, this is a form of identity theft. Cindy Lauper recently accused Madonna of stealing her original style and identity, and said that she was not flattered, but hurt by this. Frankly, it offends me that Tori appears to be doing a tribute to a living person! Long live the original and only Kate Bush!

Y'know, from the interviews I've read it's the fans who get pissed off by this sort of thing rather than the artists themselves. Cyndi Lauper is an exception & if she's serious she should've sued Madonna 20 years ago. I like both of them too btw. It's really hard not to influenced by others, but I don't think Tori thought "I want to be Kate Bush" when she was playing the piano aged 4! Read "Melancholy Elephants" by Spider Robinson. It makes some interetsing points about copyright and creativity.

I realise that all creative works are in some part derivative. However, I find it unsavoury when artists replicate part, or all, of a living person's work. You probably have a point that some artists do not mind this- perhaps Kate perceives it differently from me, and believes that Tori is paying her a huge compliment?

Glad that you can see things from my perspective! I have nothing against Tori, or her fans, though. I think it's perhaps a case of heroine worship taken a step too far! She is probably a really nice girl who lacks the confidence to believe totally in herself and her own identity.
