I think it is that he has a verismo personality and passion, and a beautiful bel canto intrument. He hits those top notes without much protection... like his admitted heroes Tucker and Di Stefano. Emotionally he has this role, but he payed for it in vocal capital. (I love it nonetheless.)

1979, Carreras sang alot of things that he should'nt have. As a big Carreras fan I wish he had chosen roles a bit more carefully. He sounds glorious here.

Carreras sang this aria beautiful here and at the first 3 tenors concert.Some voices by nature are more delicate than others.they wear more regardless of what they sing.

The passion, the artistry, the diction, the phrasing, the sheer BEAUTY of the voice....I know his voice declined early, and yet Gigli sang this role, and Pagliacci, with an even smaller, more lyric voice and went on and on forever. Technique?

I think so. And your name sake, although fatter, a more slender voice still. I could be wrong, the darkness of Jose's voice can be missleading as to its size. Neither man had much squillo, just pure, honeyed sound.
