I hope so, but it was being taught as fact in public schools in the mid 1970s. Do you have any particulars about the circumstances to offer so I could refute anyone else who was taught the same thing I was?

This was posted as a response to the statement that Bessie Smith was NOT denied admittance to an all white hospital the night of her fatal automobile accident.

just for the record bessie smith was born in 1895 and sophie tucker started so-called "coon" singing before bessie smith was a teen. by the time bessie smith was in her stride, sophie tucker was two decades past her youth and the days when she formed the style of signging we see here. no doubt the music and her style of singing has to be derived from afircam amercian jazz and singers of the turn of the century, ragtime, cakewalk era-- sophie may have influenced bessie, not the other way round

Whether Bessie influenced Sophie, or viceversa I seem to hear some Mae West in Sophie's voice in this clip.

All of the old Vaudevillians copied different aspects of each other's styles to create their own. Mae West and Sophie had a feud going on for quite a few years when Sophie accused Mae of doing exactly that.
Bessie Smith's arm ... ( 3 months ago by BabyJaneHudson)
Bessie Smith's arm was severed when the accident that claimed her life occurred. There obviously was an extreme loss of blood so whether or not she would have even made it to the hospital is a point worth mentioning. I had read that it was the ambulance drivers who refused to take her to the hospital because of her race not that the hospital was segregated. She died at the scene.

Interesting seeing Sophie with a row of mikes in front of her. In his book My Friends, George Burns has a section on how a lot of old stage performers(like Jolson) had trouble mastering using microphones. It looks like Redhotmama got it mastered. And, the first big white lady coon singer was Mae Irwin, who appears in the 1896 Edison movie The Kiss. She was Woodrow Wilson's favorite singer.

I would suggest that the reason she seems to have mastered the mikes is that she doesn't need them! That is a mighty voice, very reminiscent of Ethel Merman. Those old time vaudevillians--or their Music Hall equivalents in England--could really belt a song and be heard in the very last row. The English Music Hall singer Florrie Forde had a voice like that. No mikes needed. :)

That's a myth. Bessie was taken straight to the black hospital, which was right across the street from the white hospital. There is no evidence that Jim Crow killed her. It was the car accident that killed her.

There were no black ... ( 2 months ago by BabyJaneHudson)
There were no black and white hospitals in PA at the time of Bessie's death. That was the South you're talkin' about. Bessie Smith's arm was severed at the shoulder when she was struck by a vehicle coming in the opposite direction down a lonely Pa 2 lane road in the dark. The loss of blood HAD to be extreme especially for the time - the 1930's. I doubt she would have made it anywhere beyond the ambulance because of the medical treatments at the time.

why are you so hell bent on trying to convince people that the white people had nothing to do with poor Bessie's death...?
There were no separate black hospitals in that area at the time.
