I'm 26 yrs of age and very seldom do I get to come "full circle." To all those before me, to all those with me and to all those after ... I'm glad to be amongst your company. Thank You to all who've made this moment possible. I know it sounds weird but i'm being sincere... honestly.. thank you.

nah, she hasn't been ignored. she was a big name during "the era", i recall vividly. she "retired" at the age of 24, i gather she was reluctant to become too entwined in the business (might have been a smart move - her publishing royalties already had to have been substantial). her later "comebacks" were well received, but she did not really commit to a schedule of recording & touring that would have ever-widened her fan base to any appreciable degree.
What I always heard ... ( 2 months ago by rondimi)
What I always heard is that she stopped touring due to intense stage fright. Regardless, this song is as powerful today as ever. Such a unique artist.

re: touring...that may be so (i'm not so sure) - but for such a prolific songwriter, stage fright does not account for why she was not recording nearly as much after that period.
nice song ( 2 months ago by 233dlb)

"Girls Like Us", pg. 188, on Laura Nyro at the Monterey Pop Music Festival: "Nyro and her backup singers had arrived at the festival in long, black nightclub gowns, and she, a rare bird from another planet, was overtaken, confounded, and out-numbered by the psychedelia of Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix, and Joplin, and by the SoCal hipness of the Mamas and the Papas, who had recently made electric folk rock sybaritic and glamorous.
Laura bombed at the ... ( 1 week ago by RWMHUBBARD)
Laura bombed at the festival and as she sang, she heard, or thought she heard, the audience booing her. "Laura walked off the stage crying." Michelle Phillips recalls, and as both Michelle and festival coproducer (with John Phillips) Lou Adler attest: "Laura carried that baggage all her life."
But, almost three ... ( 1 week ago by RWMHUBBARD)
But, almost three decades later, Adler and Pennebaker carefully watched and (with the aid of sound amplification that had been unavailable in 1967) listened to the original footage of Laura's performance, and they made an astonishing discovery: the booing was something Laura had imagined. "Those weren't boos!" Adler says today: "It was a person saying "We ... love ... you!"

Lou Adler and Michelle Philips were eager to get the tape to Laura to reverse her pain. Laura died, of ovarian cancer, in April 1997, before she was able to hear it."

Interesting stuff RWMHUBBARD. And this probably explains at least in part why she has never received the full recognition that she deserves as a singer and songwriter- it appears that she shunned publicity after the debacle at Monterey. I didn't become aware of Laura until a few years ago, then was astounded at the body of work she produced!!! Obviously, she ranks right there with Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and the other great female singers and songwriters of the late 60's-early 70's.

Kanye West is a genius! And Laura Nyro was one way before him! He sampled this song on his 'Graduation' album. She was an intense singer-songwriter. Nearly all of the Nyro albums from the late 60's through the early 70's were classics. Check out 'Gonna Take A Miracle' produced by Gamble & Huff with backing vocals by Labelle. You know this woman was incredibly soulful if Patti Labelle played second fiddle for her. Long live Nyro.
