i think most pacific islanders originated from southeast asia from the Austronesian tribes of TAIWAN...taiwan is said to be the birth place of the Austronesian tribes...its funny you should see the indigenous dances of Taiwan too, they are soo cool and the indigenous people look like most pacific islanders

Im afraid you're missing the point. Its not about ethnicity in general. Its about external, as opposed to internal, transitions.

Good point. It is sad that most of the ancient culture was lost. Let us preserve and practice what remains. These dances, although interpretations, are performed to celebrate the ancient Chamorros. It is a modern celebration of an ancient culture.
Chamorros and ... ( 2 months ago by cham0rro)
Chamorros and Chamorro culture are a blend of things native, Hispanic, Asian, and American. Our culture has seen many changes over the past 500 years. It's evolved into a new culture. Look at other former Spanish colonies. Is the Mexicao of today same as that of 500 years ago? Spanish is the main language in Mexico now. Catholic is the main religion. Chamorros were able to preserve much of their language in spite of outside influences. Words have been borrowed, but it remains a distinct language
Why are people so ... ( 2 months ago by islanchamoru)
Why are people so critical of these dances. Read the description. They are interpretations. I could make my own costumes from coconut leaves, write a chant in Chamorro, and perform it to a crowd. And I can call it Chamorro dance. It could be my own interpretation. Even Aztec and Maya culture demonstrations performed today in Mexico are modern interpretations. Dances evolve due to the outside influences. The dance in this video is testament to that.

They are misintrepretations. Its foolish. You can see the truth of Guam thru History. Look it up (internet, books, elders, etc.) and I guarantee, you wont find this "so called dance" in history. Its all a MADE UP!!
Look up the word " ... ( 2 months ago by islanchamoru)
Look up the word "interpretation". The fact that is it made up makes it an interpretation. If this was an actual ancient dance, then it would be subject to misinterpretation.
interpretation: the rendering of a dramatic part, music, dance, etc., so as to bring out the meaning, or to indicate one's particular conception of it.

Whether or not it's made up, it tells a story!!! And that's what cultural dances are about. The dances tell of stories that about the anciet people! Then we have the Bailan Espanot which was the most recent encounter so we know more about those dances...yet again, those dances tell a story! So all you people that keep saying these ancient dances are made up, get over it...especially if you are Chamorro....because you don't need to say negative things about the culture!

Of course it is made up! That's what makes it an "interpretation". It would be a "misinterpretation" if it was based on an actual dance that existed. The description says that these are "interpretations".
HUH! How can you ... ( 1 month ago by pacificrules)
HUH! How can you interpret a dance that never existed in the first place, and say "its an interpretation of Guam's ancient dance?.?. There's should be any interpretations to begin with. Let's stop pretending to be Polynesians AND LETS BE REAL. We need to keep it original and stick with the Bailan Espanot as we have always done for the past 4-500yrs.
Thanks for your ... ( 1 month ago by kuraku3)
Thanks for your comments to the video I posted. Silly argument of the meaning of "interpretation" and "misinterpretation." In my description clearly state that these dances "...are interpretations of what the ancient dances MAY have looked like." What they "may" have looked like. Interpretations of anything are always subject to criticsm.

Additionally, I agree with you about showcasing more of the Bailan Espa
ñot. Which is why I have posted more videos of our Chamorro-Hispanic dance. It is our Hispanic dances that set us apart from the other islanders. We have blended both our native styles with Hispanic styles to create a unique style of dancing only found here in the Marianas. Geographically we are Pa
cific Islanders, but culturally we are very much Hispanic. It is a shame many of us don't recognize our culture as a Hispanic one.
Those who disagree ... ( 1 month ago by kuraku3)
Those who disagree need to do more research into Hispanic culture. Each former Spanish colony has a their own local Hispanic cutlure. From Puerto Rico to Peru, Chile to Mexico, Guam to the Phillippines. We all share the Hispanic influence. Each country with their own local Hispanic identity. Why should we allow ourselves to lose our Hipanic identity. Why can't we continue to be influenced by our colonial brothers and sisters in the Hispanic world? So much connects us with them. Biba Chamorro!

Great comments! I've been to Peru, Costa Rica, and Mexico. And all these places, just like Guam, had a native culture. Today these countries showcase both native and Hispanic heritage in their dance styles. When I watched dances in those countries and saw similarities to our own Hispanic dances, I really felt so much that we Chamorros are part of the Hispanic world. It is a shame that we do not try to renew our ties with the Hispanic world. I think I'll take more Spanish lessons! Biba Chamorro!

the Spanish word means "bald" or "shaved head" .In Guam and other Micronesian Islands they link it to the word "chamorri" which in their native language refers to the higher caste of indigenous people...it is still being argued what the correct term for their people should be as much history has been lost due to Spanish and American colonization, as well as a renewed interest in history prior to foreign occupation.

In mexico "chamorro" means the part of the leg . The calves. And the Spanish may have referred to the ancient men because of there mostly shaved head appearance. And called them Chamorros "the shaved headed ones".
