your all idiots, no one knows where the original comes from...but Bob Dylan was the first to sing it, even though there were already different versions. So we can all agree it was a black guy who plays blues in new orleans. Because it sounds very much like blues.

Nope... Actually it's known fact it was british folk song. And then it came to america and became a blues ballad. And it Bob Dylan wasn't first, I had a 1925 or somethin' record of Woody Guthrie singin this song, though it was far away from that known version, it was more country style.

lol...i laugh at you. Its far from FACTS that this song EVER originated from britain. Its and American folk song, and the oldest recording of the song is by Clarence TOm Ashley. Even if it was Woody, he is also an American.

The tune is taken from an old British folk song. Then the British band, The Animals, worked on it and added more lyrics. (Their earlier versions were like 2 minutes or less) So in other words, it's pretty much a British song. Lol @ Americans, thinking they invented everything.

Nina Simone and Odetta were including this adaptation of an original Black spiritual before Dylan. Simone recorded it twice , one live version predating Dylan's by several years. The Animals were influnced by Simone's version. Dylan and Pete Seeger were arrogantly arguing over who arranged it and [re]popularised it first...mainstream tend to see their versions as the originals but as is usually the case it was a staple of Black music way before the white mainstream apprpriated it.
