This is the first of Derrens stuff that I am a little skeptical about. I think the dead people all have photos that you get a bad feeling in the gut of. That man who where the first one to be announced dead looked like a freak ... Scary face

3 points:
1) All the dead photos are people that are not smiling or plain or drab colored photos. In the same way all the ones that are alive are smiling or happy.
2)Most of the dead pile ones the pictures had to be turned in some way for him to view them properly.
3)Derren makes use of subtle body language. Watch his hands go to his eyes at about 1:35. The camera doesn't show it for all of them but I think he probably did it for a good many.
These combined caused him to choose like he did.

Let me explain this as simply as I can - try to follow. The photos are pre-stacked all dead, then all alive (or vice versa) - Derron know and is very familiar with the last picture of one type, and the first picture of the other type. as the guy is choosing, it means the bottom several pictures in each stack are all the dead pictures, and the top several pictures in each stack end up being the alive pictures.

There is misdirection when he pulls out the "dividing" picture from one pile... notice he splits that pile into two piles side by side as he asks why the guy chose that picture. then he does the same with the other pile, and asks about why the other choice. what we don't notice, and the other person doesn't notice is that he re-stacks the pictures by how HE split them, not by how the guy divided them. He sets the mood so well, and sells the moment so well that no one notices.

lol wow you all are fools. the facisl expression the "mood" and attitude of the pictures gives him a feeling if he would like that person ro not. like, why would he choose "yes" to the guy smoking, or to the ugly ones, or to the negative looking ones? don't be such fools. also, in 200 years now, if they were tested on the same pics, u think ppl would say "no" to all of them? please, use your brain. well.. maybe because i'm asian i'm smarter then i guess

You cannot say that Derren Brown has arranged the photos in a particular order. Even if he did, it wouldn't make a difference depending of the person's mood to view the people in the photos. It's clear instinct when our minds sense a emotional connection either when you know a person has passed away or is still full of life. The expressions, background surroundings, or recent experiences will alter our emotional instincts. Feverpa,you may be right with the set-up but not how he chose the photos.

Excellent. Thank you. That explains it. The edit cuts out the second dividing the pile so it is even harder to spot, but you are absolutely right.

people say that this trick is simple misdirection, and it's probably true. Although I noticed that the people in the "dead" pile were generally drinking, smoking, wearing glasses, or not smiling. Maybe those things just helped enforce the trick.

Get a deck of cards, and do this... follow along. Pre-arrange the deck all read, then all black. Then start at teh top and deal them in two separate piles in whatever pattern you want. At the end, both piles will be all red at the bottom, and all black at the top. A simple cut of these stacks
(while mis-directing the subject) is all that's needed to create a pile of all reds, and a pile of all blacks. This trick is done that way.

he first blanks out his ideas/moods. The meet at the graveyard and he says: lovely.lovely.lovely.lovely place. then he says death, and some good stuff again. So the guy cant dive any more and then. Derren determines how to pile the fotos, like other comments pointed out before.

and you really think darren knew 20 odd dead (and young) pple AND thought it was right of him to use thier beloved pics in a stupid majic trick? Darren is the genious behind this trick, not some fabulous afterlife
