Thats irrelevant. Different times, different conditions. Why should Coe have to keep running close to his WR when he was already the record holder? Only 1 other person broke 1:44 between '79 and '83; he was so far ahead of the rest of the world, whereas Kipketer was trying to chase Coe's record and had a few other guys under 1:43 to push him. The golden league system in the late '90's was geared to fast times every week. That just wasn't the case in the early '80's where people ran to win.

I would bet that Kipketer's won loss record in the 800 was also far superior to Coe's. Coe ran a couple of great 800s - but had much better success at 1500 and mile. He was not in Kip's league at 800.

You should do your homework. Coe only lost 2 races over 800m in 4 years between the European Champs in 78 & 82; 39 races out of 41. He was undefeated in 79 and 81. Between the end of '77 and the beg of 88 he only lost 8 races, most of those were when he was ill. I'm sure Kip has a great record too, but he lost some big races also when maybe not at a peak. When Coe broke the record in 81 he was 1.71sec ahead of the next fastest ever! To suggest that Kip's record is "far superior" is just wrong!
