the explosions in this documentary are simply ridiculous. most people seem to think that there was a nuclear explosion. this is not true. accidents at nuclear reactors cannot trigger a nuclear explosion because the conditions for such an explosion are not met. reactors are just built that way. what can happen is: 1) a meltdown (which occurred only after the chernobyl explosion) 2) a steam explosion, which is precisely what happened at chernobyl. the animation should have shown mainly steam

Actually, it was an ... ( 2 weeks ago by Wraithldr13)
Actually, it was an explosion. There are reports that say that burning debris was falling on nearby buildings and catching them on fire. Steam doesn't catch objects on fire. And, technically speaking, if an explosion releases radiation, it can be safely considered a nuclear explosion.
No. Technically a ... ( 2 weeks ago by fedaykin6666)
No. Technically a nuclear explosion is when a chain reaction occurs. What happened at Chernobyl NPP was not a nuclear explosion. There was a steam explosion. As for burning debris, do you realize what kind of heat came out of the reactor when the lid was blown off? This immense heat set debris on fire, indeed. But there was no nuclear explosion :)

Here are some of the English translations from around the 3:00 mark:
"What has happened?" "The reactor has exploded, we are having a meltdown!" "That's ridiculous! The Soviet Union is infallable and makes no mistakes. You'll see, by the year 2008 the whole world will be Communist." "I'm telling you we are having a disaster beyond our control." "You know nothing
! Are you a nuclear engineer?" "No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night."

Uranium is only ... ( 2 weeks ago by GCarty80)
Uranium is only minimally radioactive (hence the long half-life). It's the stuff with half-lives less than 1000 years that's really dangerous.
No, the RBMK was ... ( 2 weeks ago by GCarty80)
No, the RBMK was far more complex and expensive than the PWRs which most Western countries use. The design features which made it so dangerous were a result of the requirement that the reactor be able to produce not just electricity but also weapons-grade plutonium (The plutonium from Western nuclear power stations contains a lot of plutonium-240 as well as -239, which would make it useless for bombs).
keep in mind that ... ( 1 week ago by klipsch21)
keep in mind that the temperature of the air inside of the reactor went to critical levels, and because there is a lack of flammable materials present in the reactor it self, the moment that superheated air reached the oxygenated atmosphere it would've ignited, also some of the reactors fiery hot components were also expelled during the explosion. Mind u 2, if there was only mainly steam why would firemen be needed.
