So what we've learned is that when driven as far away from real life conditions as possible, the Prius is negligibly less efficient than an M3.
And from that we're supposed to conclude it doesn't matter what car we buy. Get real.
What's wrong with ...( 3 months ago by kanov)
What's wrong with you dude? Or you just being 'annoying'? They've just done it. While sometimes they seem to just go for the comedy essence, this feat can happen in real life. Physically impossible? No. Modern engines will shut down fuel intake into the cylinders when they gas pedal's off. No matter you're doing 20 or 200kph. So crusing by first achieving high speed and then releasing it in top gear will get you far without consuming fuel at all. You can do this easily on highways.
So, what i mean is, ...( 3 months ago by kanov)
So, what i mean is, you CAN get a better mileage in an M3 if it's driven consistantly at its crusing speed (where it revs low while still being fast, lets say 120-140kph), where the Prius' engine revs much higher and the battery is well out if you use power at all time. For city driving with low speed and lots of stop and go, the Prius is at its best. But for long high-speed crusing, MANY cars will beat it. One more thing, smaller engines doesn't necessarily mean better fuel consumption.
However, this test ...( 3 months ago by kanov)
However, this test also have it's flaw. He's too close behind the prius, which means less drag and (here biased) better fuel consumption. The effect is very big. I've seen mythbusters test about the effect of slipstream in fuel economy. The effect is enormous.

toyota prius looks like a cheese wedge. It's an ugly and pointless tree hugger car thats supposed to "save the world" and be economical. It is slow and you don't really even get real good gas millage anyway probably can barely make it up a hill.

yes, but that was ...( 3 months ago by masterkenlove)
yes, but that was behind a tractor trailer, not a compact car. so the slip stream would be much less effective. also there is many turns that would disrupt the slip stream from being consistent. the m3 probably never surpassed 2500 revs while the prius was running flat out. this shows the difference between small underpowerd cars vs small overpowered cars. if the engine is working less, then the engine consumes less fuel.

"it isn't what you drive, but how you drive it" - direct quote from this clip. well, in this clip, the prius was driven, on a race track "as fast as possible"......this is NOT how you drive a prius in the real world. i get 45-52mpg consistently. this video is pointless. and the part about complaining about how "environmentally damaging" it is to make the batteries. hmmm....so building a BMW M3 is less damaging to the environment? give me a break.

This is the perfect example that sometimes Top Gear can be very silly and come up with absurd conclusions.

yeah i dont know. are you sure? bacause i just searched m3 on google images and theres two types of m3, the e92 which is the longer version and the more compact m3 based on a bmw 320i. The one one the video was the smaller one.

E92 is a chassis designation, and the M3 E92 comes in sedan (longer), coupe, and convertible. There are no "shorter" models, just 2 or 4 doors

well isn't it obvious? its no harder to source the parts for an M3 than it is for any regular 3 series sedan/coupe. The Prius on the other hand takes massive amounts of extra energy to build comparitively whether that comparison is against an M3 or a Prius sibling like a Corrola

Only if you perform ENGINE BRAKING. If you're cruising and idling the engine they won't simply cause something has to power the engine idling

You miss a basic fact: big engine revving low doesn' t have to consume less than small engine revving high. Enegry needed to move the car decides.

the Prius conserves gasoline when the brake pedal is depressed which is why it can consistently get more mpg on the streets than the highway, furthermore driving the Prius with the pedal to the metal uses 100% of it's energy while driving the M3 at the same speed uses only about 60%

its is. there is no way to recycle prius batteries. A mercedes s-550 is cleaner as well. People have the misconception that the prius is clean but really its a waste. If i cared about fuel economy i would buy a vw golf deisle. they get 75mpg and are faster then priuses.
