This is a beautiful song. It's a shame I did not hear it until 2007 on a rock documentary. I thought I heard all of the good songs of the '60's and 70's, but I was wrong. I made a tribute to this song last year. May post it again soon.

I tend to believe that McGuinn erased the vocals intentionally. His ego couldn't take the idea of another supremely talented vocalist/guitarist/songwriter in the same band stealing his spotlight away from him.

I always thought the song was about Howard Hughes living in Sin City (on the 31st floor)...the mohair suits (his Mormon assistants) The scientists say it will all wash away (Hughes left Nevada after LBJ would not stop testing A Bombs in the desert). I agree about the one passage referring to Bobby Kennedy...yes, it's biblical too but I still think of Hughes when I here it...
